Jeffrey Lawrence Brooks

Is it only in Charlotte where one can make the CMPD Top 10 Most Wanted’ List and get featured on America’s Most Wanted… only to get caught and released from jail in 30 days??

Meet Jeffrey Lawrence Brooks, aka "Red." (Right)

According to AMW and CMPD, on September 30, 2005, Brooks confronted his girlfriend about the word on the street that she was cheating on him with another man. Police say the argument quickly turned violent and Brooks reportedly pistol whipped his girlfriend on the head, leaving her in serious condition. Police say Brooks didn't act alone... Detectives say Brooks own mother helped hold down the girlfriend so that her son could beat the young woman.

After hours of searching, Brooks found Walter Blair, the man Brooks suspected of cheating with his girlfriend. Brooks reportedly grabbed him and pointed a gun at him. Detectives say things turned ugly and Brooks attempted to shoot Blair but his gun misfired. Blair took off running through the neighborhood. Brooks reportedly chased Blair until he caught up with him on Porter Street. Brooks then shot Blair five times in the buttocks, stomach, and groin. Detectives say after Brooks shot Blair, he fled in a car with an accomplice and an unknown female driver.

Warrants were issued for Brooks for Attempted Murder, Possession of a Firearm by Convicted Felon, Assault On A Female, and 2 warrants for Assault With A Deadly Weapon. Apparently, CMPD thought he was dangerous enough to add him to the Top 10 Most Wanted and contact AMW to feature him on their site.

Brooks was apprehended on January 27, 2006. He was denied bail for the attempted murder charge and his bail was set at $169,000 for all the other charges police had warrants for.

Less than 30 days later, on February 21, 2006, Brooks was released from jail!

On August 8, 2006, CMPD arrested Brooks for assault on a female and communicating threats. This past Thursday, Brooks was arrested again for two counts of intimidation of a witness and carrying a gun. Here is just another example of what a joke the Mecklenburg County Justice system is...
