UPDATE: The Charlotte-Observer published an article with more information about McGraw's arrest. Apparently, he lied on his time cards for his off-duty security job. He falsified his hours- writing down hours that he didn't work.
A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer has resigned and is facing criminal charges after a departmental investigation discovered that he obtained property by false pretenses while working a second job.
Larry A. McGraw, 48, had spent 25 years with the city’s police force and was assigned to the Independence Division. McGraw had been working in his spare time to provide security at several parks for the Mecklenburg County’s Parks and Recreation department.
CMPD allows its officers to work a secondary job, something that officers estimate nearly half of the officers do, as long as it is approved by the department. McGraw’s work for the Parks and Recreation department was approved, officials said.
An internal inquiry into McGraw began in mid-December when the department’s Special Events and Secondary Employment Division found apparent work irregularities. Their initial findings led to the criminal investigation.
CMPD detectives confronted McGraw with the evidence they uncovered on December 27. He resigned that day. According to police, obtaining property by false pretenses is a Class H Felony. False pretenses occur when false representations are made to deceive another person to obtain anything of value but they did not provide specific details related to this case. The case is now being handled by the District Attorney’s Office. Source: News 14 Carolina
