UPDATE: Homicide Detectives have charged Ada Adams' son, John Lee Adams Jr. with her murder. Detectives have determined that the murder stemmed from an ongoing custody dispute over the suspect’s child.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit Detectives are conducting an investigation into a shooting which left one person seriously injured. The shooting took place inside the residence of 1626 Montana Drive, located in the Metro Division. The victim has been identified Ada Adams.
Metro Division officers responded to a call for service placed by a young teenager who was at the residence. The teen stated that his father shot his (the teen’s) grandmother while they were in the kitchen. When officers arrived on scene, they took the father into custody, secured the crime scene and located the grandmother lying on the floor in the kitchen, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. Medic began life-saving efforts on scene and transported her to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment, which at this time is classified as life-threatening. A firearm was recovered inside the residence.
This investigation is in its initial stages. The teen witness and the suspected shooter have yet to be interviewed by Homicide Unit detectives. This incident is domestic violence related and not a random act of violence. Additional details will be released by the CMPD Public Affairs Office as information becomes available.
Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to photograph it and collect physical evidence. Detectives with the Firearms Enforcement Unit and the Special Victims Unit are on-scene assisting.
