Overnight Shooting Leaves Charlotte Man Dead

An overnight shooting left a Charlotte man dead and police looking for his killer. CMPD received a call of shots fired on Garibaldi Avenue shortly after 4:00 Thursday morning.

Authorities confirmed the victim as 24 year-old Johnny Peay, who died at Carolinas Medical Center after being shot in the back while exiting his vehicle.

The suspect is described as a black male standing 6' tall, possible with a dark complexion. He also wore glasses and was seen leaving the crime scene in a four-door silver vehicle. Police say they have no reason to classify this as a random act of violence and suspect Peay knew his killer.

Shelby Shooting Leaves 1 Dead, Another in Hospital

Shelby police officers responded to a call of shots fired at 809 McGowan Road on Thursday night. When they arrived, they found the two victims had been shot.

Fifty-four year-old John Albert Cummings was dead on the scene while Ronnie Lee Pearson, 54, was suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso. According to police, Pearson had been involved in a dispute with 49 year-old Sherman Timothy Lee at the house on McGowan Road, when Lee shot Cummings and Pearson. Pearson was taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center and is expected to recover.

Lee, a resident of Shelby, was arrested and charged with murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. Also charged with murder is 49 year-old David Williams, whom police say acted as an accomplice to Lee. Williams and Lee are both jailed in Cleveland County without bond while they await trial.

North Mecklenburg Shooting Kills Local Teen

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are looking for the suspect in a Sunday night shooting that killed a 17 year-old   man.

CMPD responded to the call shortly after 6:30 that evening. They found Kydaryuni Curry suffering from a gunshot wound in the driveway of his north Mecklenburg home, located on Northgate Trail Drive. Curry died on the scene.

Curry was reportedly working on his car when the shooting occurred. A red SUV with several passengers was seen leaving the scene of the crime, but no suspects have been named at this time.

Greensboro Police Arrest Charlotte Murder Suspect

Daniel Rashad Gomez

Thanks to a Crime Stoppers tip, an accused murderer is behind bars. Authorities arrested Daniel Rashad Gomez, 20, and charged him Thursday with first-degree murder for the shooting death of 20 year-old Trevor Anthony Todd.

Gomez is accused of shooting Todd after a fight took place at a Greensboro party on April 23 of 2011. Todd died at Moses Cone Hospital from the injuries he sustained. Gomez was apprehended in Charlotte by Greensboro's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team.

Gomez is jailed in Guilford County without bond.

CMPD Arrests Second Suspect in Wednesday's Murder Case

Seventeen year-old Trellis Tremayne Rogers  was arrested by CMPD Saturday in connection with the shooting death of 25 year-old Zachary Jamal Pittman last Wednesday night.

The shooting occurred near the intersection of Yellow Rose Lane and Terrier Way. According to authorities, Pittman ran to nearby English Setter Way after being shot, where he later died. Rogers is accused of setting up a drug transaction with Pittman before the killing.

Police charged Rogers with murder and two counts of armed robbery, the same as his accomplice in the case, 20 year-old  Brandon Newkirk, who was arrested last week.

Greenville Teen Pleads Guilty but Mentally Ill to Killing His Mother

Eighteen year-old Joshua McEachern, a Greenville native, was sentenced to nearly 30 years in prison after pleading guilty but mentally ill to killing his mother. The incident happened on Mother's Day of 2011

According to investigators, McEachern shot his brother and mother after a disagreement, killing his mother. Daniel McEachern, the brother, remarkably lived after being shot in the chest several times.

Joshua's mother, Kathy McEachern, was killed after being shot in the face.

It was the testimony of a psychiatrist that allowed the court to accept the mentally ill plea. McEachern was sentenced to 27 years in prison and must serve 85% of that time before he is eligible for parole.

UPDATE: 16 Year-Old Charged With Death of Charlotte Teenager

Police have charged Damien Wright, 16, with first-degree murder for the  shooting death of 13 year-old Khalil Malik Cousart. A motive has yet to be released, but police say the victim knew his accused killer.

A teenager was killed early Tuesday morning / Wednesday night near Parkway Avenue and Tuckaseegee Road. According to investigators, a passing motorist in the area was stopped by a young male about 1:00 AM. The male alerted the motorist to the victim, who called police.

When police arrived they found Cousart had been shot in the chest at lease once. Investigators found 2 shell casings at the scene, while neighbors claimed they heard a minimum of five gunshots. Cousart was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center where he later died. The young man that flagged down the motorist fled the scene before police arrived. Wright is jailed held in Mecklenburg County without bond.

This is the fourth case this year of a teenager shot and killed in Charlotte.

UPDATE: 16 Year-Old Charged With Death of Charlotte Teenager

UPDATE: The victim in this case has been identified as 13 year-old Khalil Malik Cousart. Police have charged Damien Wright, 16, with his murder. A motive has yet to be released, but police say the victim knew his accused killer.

This is the fourth case this year of a teenager shot and killed in Charlotte.

A teenager was killed last night near Parkway Avenue and Tuckaseegee Road. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are working to identify the victim, who they determined to be 12-15 years old. According to investigators, a passing motorist in the area was stopped by a young male about 1:00 AM. The male alerted the motorist to the victim, who called police. Police say the victim wasn't carrying identification and have not released a suspect or motive. Police also referred to the investigation as a death investigation, not a homicide.

Detectives Conducting a Homicide Investigation in the Steele Creek Division

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation at 11339 Red Hickory Lane in the Steele Creek Division. The call for service came in at 7:28 p.m., on Tuesday, July 24, 2012.  The deceased has been positively identified as Alfred Michael Smith.  This is Charlotte's 31st homicide of 2012.

Steele Creek Division patrol officers responded to a call for service placed by a concerned neighbor in regards to the welfare of the male who resides at 11339 Red Hickory Lane. The male subject was found deceased when the neighbor entered the home to check on him. The neighbor then exited the house and called 911 to report the incident. There are obvious signs of foul play at the crime scene. Detectives with the Homicide Unit are canvassing the neighborhood to determine if anyone has any information that will aid the investigation.

CMPD Investigating a Murder on Timbertop Lane

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit and A/D/W Unit are conducting an investigation into a shooting in the 5900 block of Timbertop Lane which left one male deceased and two others seriously injured.   The incident took place in the Hickory Grove Division. The call for service came in at 12:19 am. The victim has been positively identified as Kevin Washington. This is Charlotte's 31st homicide of 2012. (possibly 32nd)

Hickory Grove Division patrol officers responded to a shots fired call for service with multiple people shot. When officers arrived on scene, they located three males suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. One victim was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic. Two others were transported to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment.

Detectives are canvassing surrounding homes to determine if anyone has information that will aid the investigation. According to preliminary witness statements, a large number of people were attending a party at 6008 Timbertop Lane. An altercation between two separate groups precipitated the shooting, which took place outside on Timbertop Lane.

Woman Stabs Boyfriend to Death During Domestic Dispute

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit are conducting a domestic violence related homicide investigation at 8013 Andover Creek Drive in the Steele Creek Division. The call for service came in at 10:07am, on Saturday, July 14, 2012.  The deceased has positively identified as Lonnie Denar McConico.

Steele Creek Division patrol officers responded to a call for service placed by a female who stated that she had stabbed her boyfriend.  When officers arrived on scene, they located the male suffering from a stab wound. Officers secured the scene for Medic, who pronounced the male deceased on scene. The female was transported voluntarily to CMPD Headquarters for questioning.   Detectives are canvassing surrounding apartments to determine if anyone has information that will aid in the investigation.

McConico's girlfriend, whose name is being withheld, is not being charged with a crime at this time. CMPD Investigating a Murder in the Eastway Division

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit is conducting an investigation into a homicide that occurred at 719 E. 17th Street.

On Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at 1:06 p.m. Eastway Division patrol officers responded to E. 17th Street in reference to an assault with a deadly weapon call with injuries. Upon arrival officers located a male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim, identified as Matthew Thomas Hawkins was transported to CMC Main by Medic with life threatening injuries.

A second victim, Suzanne Piri, DOB: 02/08/1970, was also at the residence but was not injured. The suspect entered the residence during an apparent robbery attempt. The suspect is described as a dark skinned black male wearing a dark t-shirt and long dark shorts. He was last seen on foot towards N. McDowell Street.

The K-9 and Helicopter Units responded and attempted to track the suspect. Patrol units circulated the area but officers were unable to locate the suspect. Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence.

**On July 12, 2012 at approximately 9:45 p.m. the victim died as a result of his injuries.**

Woman Shot & Killed on Glenwood Drive

UPDATE: The victim in this case, Yoland Cooper, has died as a result of her injuries. Homicide Detectives have now charged Edward T. McClain with Murder and he remains in custody at the Mecklenburg County jail.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit are conducting an investigation into an aggravated assault that occurred at 4115 Glenwood Drive in the Metro Division. The call for service came in at 3:15 p.m. on July 12, 2012.  The female shooting victim has been identified as Yolanda Copper.

Metro Division patrol officers responded to the Knights Inn in reference to a 911 call from the manager.  The manager stated that a male staying at the inn called the desk claiming he was being robbed by a female who was in a hotel room with him. When officers arrived on scene, they located a female inside of the hotel room unconscious. Medic responded and transported the female to CMC Main where she remains in critical condition.

The male subject has been identified as Edward Timothy McClain.   Mr. McClain was voluntarily transported to CMPD headquarters where he was questioned by detectives. During the course of their investigation Homicide Detectives determined that the female and the suspect were known to one another. Mr. McClain has been charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury. Once detectives complete their interview Mr. McClain will be transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail.

Detectives Conducting a Homicide Investigation in the North Tryon Division

UPDATE: Arnold Jerard Thomas was arrested this morning in Columbia, SC, by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) without incident. The extradition process will begin immediately, but there is no current timetable on Thomas’ return to Mecklenburg County.

Additionally, it was determined that Arnold Jerard Thomas and Dantonio Gerrick Hamilton were known acquaintances, and that this incident was not a random act of violence.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation at 2520 Lanecrest Drive in the North Tryon division. The call for service came in at 3:32am, on Saturday, June 23, 2012. The victim has been identified as Dantonio Gerrick Hamilton.

North Tryon patrol officers responded to an A/D/W call in reference to a subject shot in an apartment complex parking lot. When officers arrived on scene, they located a male subject in the parking lot suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced deceased by Medic at 3:43am.

According to witnesses the suspect is described as a black male with short dreadlocks wearing a black t-shirt and jean shorts. He was last seen fleeing towards Barringer Road. The K-9 Unit responded and attempted to track the suspect. Patrol units circulated the area but officers have been unable to locate the suspect at this time.

Father Arrested After Shooting & Killing his Son on Fairfax Drive

UPDATE: Homicide Unit Detectives have identified Earnest Howard Gurley Jr., as the suspect in the murder of Benjamin James Gurley.  The incident began as a verbal altercation between the father and son, which then led to the shooting. Mr. Gurley was charged with Murder and is being held at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.    This is Charlotte, NC's 24th homicide of 2012.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation at 3157 Fairfax Drive in the CMPD Providence Division. The call for service came in at 8:43am. The victim has yet to be positively identified.

Providence Division patrol officers responded to an A/D/W call in reference to a person shot at the above residence. The 911 caller stated that he had just shot his son. When officers arrived on scene, they located a male subject on the front lawn suffering from an apparent gunshot wound; he was pronounced deceased at 8:51 a.m. Officers immediately took the suspect into custody.

Based on evidence gathered at the scene, the shooting occurred inside the residence and the victim was able to make it outside where he collapsed. The suspect has been transported to police headquarters for questioning. Once the victim has been positively identified, his name will be released.

Man Shot & Killed on Wilora Lake Rd

UPDATE:  Detectives with the Homicide Unit have charged and arrested Bobby Renard Glenn with the murder of Gregory Lamont Kilgo. Mr. Glenn is currently at CMPD Headquarters and will shortly be transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, where he will remain in their custody. Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit are conducting an investigation into a shooting that occurred at the 5600 block of Wilora Lake Road which left one man dead. The deceased has been identified as Christopher (Chris) Cordero.  The call for service came in at 5:34 p.m. on June 11, 2012.  This is the 23rd murder in Charlotte in 2012.

Hickory Grove patrol officers responded to a 911 call for service on Wilora Lake Road in reference to one male shot in a driveway. Upon arrival the victim was located and pronounced deceased by Medic.

The initial investigation indicates that the suspects and the victim had altercation in the driveway which led to the shooting. This does not appear to be a random act of violence. We believe at this time that the victim and suspects are known to one another.

According to witnesses the suspects are described as two black males, one with dreadlocks. They were last seen fleeing the scene in a white SUV, possibly a Ford Explorer, towards Sharon Amity Road. The K-9 Unit responded and attempted to track the suspect. Patrol units, as well as the helicopter, circulated the area but officers have been unable to locate the suspects at this time. Detectives are currently canvassing the area to determine if anyone saw or heard anything in the moments leading up to the shooting that will aid in the investigation.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit are conducting an investigation into a shooting that occurred at the 400 block of Coxe Avenue which left one man dead. The deceased has been identified as Gregory Lamont Kilgo.  The call for service came in at 9:04pm on Saturday, June 9, 2012.  This is the 22nd murder in Charlotte in 2012.

Metro Division patrol officers responded to a 911 call for service on Coxe Avenue in reference to one male shot in the roadway.  Upon arrival, the victim was located and pronounced deceased.

According to witnesses the suspect is described as a black male with short dreadlocks wearing all black. The K-9 Unit responded and attempted to track the suspect. Patrol units, as well as the helicopter, circulated the area but officers have been unable to locate the suspect at this time.

Detectives are currently canvassing the area to determine if anyone saw or heard anything in the moments leading up to the shooting that will aid in the investigation.

Security Guard Shot & Killed on Albemarle Rd

UPDATE:  Homicide Unit Detectives identified Habacu Rodriguez Lopez in the murder of Richard Snyder. The Violent Criminal Apprehension Team then located and arrested Mr. Lopez, who was charged with Murder and Assault with a Deadly Weapon.   The Chevy truck seen fleeing the scene has been recovered.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit and ADW Unit are conducting a homicide investigation at 5846 Albemarle Road in the CMPD Hickory Grove Division. The call for service came in at 2:16 a.m., on Tuesday, June 5, 2012. The murder victim has been identified as Richard Snyder.

Hickory Grove patrol officers responded to the El Paisano Restaurant and Bar on Albemarle Road in reference to one subject shot. Upon arrival, they located a male in the front parking lot of the business suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Medic arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased. Also on scene, was a female that was transported to CMC Main with non-life threatening injuries.

The victim is an employee (security guard) of the business and was attempting to ensure that several male subjects causing a disturbance were leaving the property when the victim was shot.   The suspect vehicle is a small, green two door truck, possibly a Chevy, that was last seen fleeing outbound on Albemarle Road.

Man Shot & Killed on Durham Lane

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit and A/D/W Unit are conducting a homicide investigation at 3614 Durham Lane in the North Division. The call for service came in at 11:34 pm  on Monday, May 21, 2012.  The victim has been identified as Rodney Emmett Robinson.   This is the 20th murder in Charlotte, NC so far in 2012.

North Division patrol officers responded to 3614 Durham Lane in reference to a shots fired call in the area. Upon arrival, they located a male inside the home suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Medic arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased at 11:43 p.m.

No other people were inside the home when officers arrived on the scene. Detectives with the Homicide Unit and ADW Unit are canvassing the neighborhood to determine whether there are additional witnesses to this incident. The investigation is in its early stages.  Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Homicide Prosecution Team responded to the scene as well.
