DA's Homicide Team: Quarterly Report for July 2011-September 2011

Thirty-one defendants were convicted in homicide cases during the months of July, August and September of 2011:

July 7, 2011
Ishmael Castle, 20, pled guilty to accessory after the fact to assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury in connection with the 2010 killing of Michael P. Smith, 29. He is awaiting sentencing on the charge.

July 13, 2011
Christopher Patrick Jones, 20, was tried for 1) first-degree murder and 2) possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, for the 2009 murder of Benizer Graham, Jr., 22. The jury returned verdicts of guilty on both charges. The Honorable F. Lane Williamson, Superior Court Judge, sentenced Jones to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder charge, plus 16-20 months in prison for the firearms charge.

July 14, 2011
JaHoward Jones, 19, pled guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The Honorable F. Lane Williamson, Superior Court Judge, sentenced Jones to 14-17 months in prison.

July 22, 2011
Selina Shiuli, 32, pled guilty to 1) second-degree murder, 2) attempted first-degree murder, and 3) assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, for the 2007 murder and attempted murder of her two daughters, ages 6 and 1. The Honorable Yvonne Mims Evans, Superior Court Judge, sentenced Shiuli to 225-288 months in prison.

August 2, 2011
Daniel Foster, 35, was tried for 1) first-degree murder, 2) discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, and 3) possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, for the 2010 murder of Willie Hopper, II, 31. The jury returned verdicts of guilty on all charges. The Honorable Robert C. Ervin, Superior Court Judge, sentenced Foster to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder charge, plus 113-146 months in prison for the remaining charges.

August 11, 2011
Rodarius Frieson, 22, and Ronaldo Frieson, 25, each pled guilty to second-degree murder for the 2008 murder of Larry O’Faire, 57. The Honorable Yvonne Mims Evans, Superior Court Judge, sentenced Rodarius Frieson to 100-129 months in prison and sentenced Ronaldo Frieson to 142-180 months in prison.

August 18, 2011
Sabrina Black, 26, was tried for first-degree murder for the 2009 murder of Mary Wilson, 23. The jury returned a verdict of guilty to the charge of voluntary manslaughter. The Honorable Timothy S. Kincaid, Superior Court Judge, sentenced Black to 62-84 months in prison.

Demaris Goodson, 29, pled guilty to felony death by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter for the 2010 death of Maurice Fernandez McDowell, 23. The Honorable James W. Morgan, Superior Court Judge, sentenced Goodson to 24-38 months in prison.

August 29, 2011

Before the Honorable Timothy S. Kincaid, Superior Court Judge:

Artives Freeman, 27, pled guilty to 1) second-degree murder and 2) possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, for the 2006 murder of Latahnya Berry, 46. Freeman was sentenced to 176-221 months in prison.

Kevin Powell, 30, was tried for first-degree murder for the 2007 murder of Jamarr Flowers, 28. The jury returned a verdict of guilty to the charge of second-degree murder. Powell was sentenced to 189-236 months in prison.

September 1, 2011

Before the Honorable Richard D. Boner, Senior Resident Superior Court Judge:

Steven Elam, 41, pled guilty to 1) second-degree murder and 2) two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, for the 2004 murder and robbery of Ronnie Page, 32, and the 2004 robbery of Juan Ramirez, 23. Elam was sentenced to 384-489 months in prison.
Jonathan Fitzgerald, 19, and Danielle Holmes, 18, each pled guilty to 1) second-degree murder, 2) robbery with a dangerous weapon, and 3) conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, for the 2010 murder and robbery of Oscar Chavez, 28. Fitzgerald and Holmes were each sentenced to 246-323 months in prison.

Cherelle Griffin, 20, pled guilty to 1) second-degree murder and 2) discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, for the 2010 murder of Devon Clement, 20. Griffin was sentenced to 239-305 months in prison.

Kevin Hernandez, 17, pled guilty to 1) conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and 2) encouraging gang activity, in connection with the 2010 murder of Alenjandro Leon-Martinez, 34. Hernandez was sentenced to 204-255 months in prison.
Justus Moss, 31, pled guilty to 1) second-degree murder and 2) discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, for the 2008 murder of Demetrio Calvillo, 36. Moss was sentenced to 221-284 months in prison.

Tiarice Robinson, 24, pled guilty to second-degree murder for the 2005 murder of Corey Stowe, 17. Robinson was sentenced to 189-236 months in prison.
September 14, 2011

Damien Derale Watson, 27, was tried for first-degree murder for the 2008 murder of David O’Bryan Barber, 23. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty.

September 16, 2011

Demone Evans, 26, pled guilty to two counts of second-degree murder for the 2010 murders of Tia Mitchell, 23, and Dominique McGriff, 21. The Honorable Richard D. Boner, Senior Resident Superior Court Judge, sentenced Evans to 268-340 months in prison.

Nathaniel Pass, 28, pled guilty to second-degree murder for the 2008 murder of Jeffrey Williams, 27. The Honorable Yvonne Mims Evans, Superior Court Judge, sentenced Pass to 120-153 months in prison.

September 26, 2011

Before the Honorable James W. Morgan, Superior Court Judge:
Adrian Alcala, 27, pled guilty to 1) second-degree murder and 2) robbery with a dangerous weapon, for the 2010 murder of Thomas Lee Oleary, 53. Alcala was sentenced to 207-258 months in prison.

John Hornes, 57, pled guilty to second-degree murder for the 2010 murder of Cleamard Chisholm, 58. Hornes was sentenced to 124-158 months in prison.

September 29, 2011

Before the Honorable James W. Morgan, Superior Court Judge:

Anthony Daniels, 32, pled guilty to second-degree murder for the 2010 murder of Monica Murphy, 30. Daniels was sentenced to 126-161 months in prison.
Larry Gilchrist, 22, pled guilty to two counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle in operation in connection with the 2010 killing of Deandre Kidd. Gilchrist was sentenced to 80-105 months in prison.

Byron Sadler, 17, pled guilty to 1) involuntary manslaughter and 2) possession of a handgun by a minor, for the 2010 death of Jamal Pinkney, 18. Sadler was sentenced to 16-20 months in prison. Sadler was sentenced to an additional 30 days in jail; that sentence was suspended pending his successful completion of 18 months of supervised probation.

Wesley Woodling, 28, pled guilty to second-degree murder for the 2009 murder of Joseph Muse, 26. Woodling was sentenced to 114-146 months in prison.

Before the Honorable F. Lane Williamson, Superior Court Judge:

Corey Grant, 29, pled guilty to second-degree murder for the 2009 murder of Jimmy Deshawn Sanderlin, 24. Grant was sentenced to 201-251 months in prison.

Kevin McClain, 28, pled guilty to 1) second-degree murder and 2) first-degree burglary, for the 2009 murder of Manuel Mosqueda-Sevedra,53. McClain was sentenced to 180-225 months in prison.

Robert Lee Parker, 56, pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the 2011 death of Richard Alweil, 49. Parker was sentenced to 19-23 months in prison.

Cruz Pena, 20, pled guilty to 1) conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and 2) attempted armed robbery, in connection with the 2010 murder of Alenjandro Leon-Martinez, 34, and the attempted robbery of another person. Pena was sentenced to 276-350 months in prison.
