A bail bondsman was speaking to someone at the Fernwood Apartments when he felt a burning sensation in his back. The 35-year-old man told officers he heard a pop but he doesn't know where the gunshot came from. He felt a sting and noticed he was bleeding and that's when he got in his car and started to drive himself to the hospital. The 911 operator told him he needed to pull over immediately and he did, in front of East Mecklenburg High School.
Police told 6NEWS the man drove from Thermal Road, believed to be the scene of the shooting, to the 7000 block of Monroe Road near East Mecklenburg High School where he was found in a car. Paramedics told 6NEWS the bondsman was shot in the back. He was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries, but is expected to recover.
