A former Union County, NC Parent Teachers Association (PTA) president is under investigation for misusing money while in office. Union County deputies arrested Sheri Smalley, 39, (L) Thursday and booked her on 29 fraud and forgery charges.Smalley was president of the Weddington Middle School Athletic Booster Club. Investigators said she used her position to steal more than $6,000 since April. Smalley was also the treasurer of the Wesley Chapel Elementary PTA. That group just filed a complaint Friday morning after officials inspected their books and found irregularities.
No one would talk to 6NEWS on camera, but leaders of the group said that they're surprised and considered Smalley to be a trusted member of their group. Smalley is not facing any charges from the elementary school, because deputies just started looking into that case. The mother of four is out of jail. She was released without having to post bond.
