Police said the man tried to hold Lynn up at gunpoint around 6:30 a.m. The robber fired one shot through the window of her car with a .45-caliber pistol, striking her in the chest, authorities said. When a coworker arrived at the daycare center, Lynn, who was still sitting in her car, said she had been shot and told the coworker to call for help.
"She said to call 911 or an ambulance cause (she) got shot, and so when she said that, it didn't register," said Geneva Flood, Lynn's coworker and the daycare's owner. "I said, 'You've been shot?' She said, 'In the chest.'"
Medics transported Lynn to Carolinas Medical Center where she is currently in critical but stable condition. Officers said she is alert and able to speak with them. Sgt. David Minnich with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said the crime is unusual for a couple of reasons. First, he says, robberies don't generally happen so early in the morning. The location is another rarity. "Very unusual. Daycare centers aren't usually robbery targets," he said.
Officers canvassed the neighborhood looking for the gunman but were unsuccessful. They have only a vague description of the shooter. He is a young black man with curly hair who was wearing a blue shirt. Despite the shooting and police presence, the daycare opened Thursday.
