Unmarked Police Car Stolen

On Thursday night, an unmarked Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police car was stolen from the parking lot of the Courtney Commons Apartments. Police say a Detective assigned to the Violent Crimes Task Force parked and secured the vehicle in the parking lot of the apartment complex while he was conducting foot patrol as a part of an off-duty job.

When the Detective returned to where he parked the vehicle he discovered it missing and immediately reported it stolen. He also discovered a white 2001 Dodge Caravan parked in the adjacent space with the engine running and a “popped” ignition.

The unmarked police car is a gray 2004 Dodge Intrepid. Plate #: NC VXR-6572.

The Detective had secured several police issued items in the truck of the vehicle. The items include: raid vest with “POLICE” labeled on the front and back, 12 gauge Remington Shotgun, TASER, gas mask, handcuffs and 2 Glock ammunition magazines.

Police say the subsequent investigation has revealed the 2001 Dodge Caravan was stolen from an unknown location. The registered owner has been contacted but informed investigating officers that he sold the van to a 3rd party, who has not been located. Auto Theft detectives are diligently investigating both thefts and tracking down all leads in an effort to locate the police vehicle and its contents.

Anyone with information about the person(s) responsible for these thefts or who knows the whereabouts of the stolen police vehicle are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-336-1600.
