CMPD Officer Assaulted & Hospitalized

According to a CMPD Media Release, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer named Jim Fox is hospitalized and receiving treatment for serious head injuries he sustained when Karl Alexander Untz (R) assaulted him while being taken into custody last night.

Police say two officers went to Untz's home to serve an outstanding warrant for larceny. As Officer Fox attempted to put handcuffs on Untz, he began fighting with the officers and grabbed Officer Fox's Maglight flashlight. Karl Untz struck Officer Fox several times on the head. The other officers used their Tasers to take Karl Untz into custody.

Police say Officer Fox was transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Pineville and was transferred to CMC-Main. Thankfully, Officer Fox is expected to make a complete recovery. (Note: Untz's facial injuries were present prior to this incident. Untz, unlike Officer Fox, was not hurt in the incident.)

Once again, I sickened and outraged to report a Magistrate set Untz's bond (for the felonious assault on an officer charge) at $7,500!! If our court system isn't, who IS protecting our officers (and us) from these thugs? According to CMPD, 212 CMPD officers have been assaulted in the line of duty so far this year. In 2006, there were a total of 306 assaults on law enforcement officers!
