CMPD: New Years Eve Report

As of 3:00 am, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers made 65 arrests in Center City. The ages of those arrested ranged from 16 to 45.
  • Carrying a Concealed Weapon – 2
  • Disorderly Conduct – 13
  • Impede Traffic – 13
  • Intoxicated and Disruptive – 13
  • Jaywalking – 1
  • Open Container/ABC violation – 6
  • Drug possession – 2
  • Resisting Public Officer – 3
  • Assault on Officer – 1
  • Trespassing – 2
  • Urinating in Public – 4
  • Public Affray – 1
  • Failure to disperse – 1
  • Littering – 1
  • Assault – 1
  • DWI – 1

In Center City:
- Compared to July 4th, the center city crowds were fairly light until just before midnight and then began to disperse around 1 am.
- CMPD estimates 15,000 people were in and around the center city throughout the night.
- Officers aggressively enforced laws and intervened early to avoid any escalation.
- Some evidence of gang presence- people throwing signs.

Outside of Center City:
The major issues were noise and fireworks complaints, a series of robberies (13) between 5:30 pm to 2:30 am and shots fired with injuries. - View all Significant Events -

- Among the significant events: Gunmen fired multiple shots at people at a house on Toddville Road, injuring 4. (non-life threatening injuries) The victims & bystanders were uncooperative and early indications are the incident was not random.

- The partnerships with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, MEDIC and the Charlotte Fire Department and Department of Social Services with the juveniles provided key support that helped processing run smoothly

Juveniles:
- 15 juvenile arrests—all for curfew violations & 3 face additional charges.
- The youngest curfew violator was a 10-year old male.

Fireworks/Noise Complaints (through 1:00 am)
- 313 complaints throughout the jurisdiction, no issues with fireworks explosions in the center city.
