Use of Force and Assaults on CMPD Officers

In 2007, there were 307 assaults on CMPD law enforcement officers. 27 of the assaults involved the use of or threat of a firearm by the suspect. The assaults that took place in 2007 led to 120 personal injuries to officers, ranging from bruises to death.

So far this year, there have been 120 assaults on CMPD officers. 14 of those involved the use or threat of a firearm. The rate of assaults involving firearms has increased from 8.8% of the total in 2007 to 11.7% of the total for year-to-date 2008. All assaults reported have produced 50 officer injuries in year-to-date 2008.
  • The CMPD responded to 403,901 citizen-initiated calls for service in 2007. There were 125 use of force incidents for every 100,000 citizen-initiated calls for service.
  • Of the 28,161 arrests in 2007, 505 of those involved a level of force (up from 399 in 2006). This equates into a rate 179 uses of force incidents per 10,000 arrests.
  • CMPD employees file more complaints of possible use of force violations than the public does. The total number of complaints for 2007 was 327; 130 of those were from external sources and 197 were internal.
  • Year-to-date there has been 186 use of force events and 58 total complaints, with 16 originating from external sources and 42 from internal.
