Through the end of June 2008, the number of Index crimes was 7.5% above the number reported in the first half of last year; property Index crimes rose by 7.4%, while violent Index offenses increased by 8.1%. (Read Full Report)
- 41 cases were classified as murders or non-negligent manslaughters by the end of June this year compared to 38 in the same period in 2007.
- 1.5% rise in rape; 7 % and 9% in robbery and aggravated assault respectively.
- In property Index categories, burglary in the first half of the year showed a decrease in commercial cases (-23%) while residential cases were rising (15%).
- Larceny, which accounts for over half of the total Index, continued to drive much of the increase in property crime through June with a mix of trends: Larceny from auto year-to-date was 20% over last year-to-date, but it showed some signs of slowing compared to the previous month and June of last year.
- Reports of shoplifting rose 21% this year.
- Bicycle theft and miscellaneous larceny were both down year-to-date by -10% and -6%.
- Vehicle theft showed only a 2.9% increase, while arson declined by -14%.
- Arrests increased by 5.4% so far this year, and the number of citations issued by CMPD officers continued to top last year's totals (+6%).
- 31 traffic fatalities were recorded in the first half of the year compared to 28 last year; 23 of this year's traffic deaths involved a driver or passenger killed and 8 involved a pedestrian death.
