Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's July 4th After-Action Report:
- CMPD’s goal for July Fourth was to ensure people had a safe environment in which to celebrate the holiday, whether they were in the center city or neighborhoods
- The operations plan was thorough and successfully implemented
- Crowds at the stadium for the fireworks show and around the center city were significantly smaller than they were last year, perhaps in part because of the weather
- Officers aggressively enforced laws and intervened early to avoid any escalation
- Excellent partnerships made things run especially well – Department of Social Services with the juveniles and the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, MEDIC and the Charlotte Fire Department in particular provided key support
- Patrol Divisions were busy. Significant events include a homicide in North Tryon that resulted from an apparent neighborhood dispute and a shooting on Independence Blvd. that injured two people (non-life-threatening injuries)
Arrests:
As of 2:30 AM, there were 42 arrests in the center city. Last year, there were a total of 143 arrests
Juveniles:
Prior to midnight and the youth protection ordinance curfew, 5 juvenile arrests (possession of fireworks, disorderly conduct and trespassing). Four of the juveniles are 15 years old, one is 13.
Curfew violations: 2 (both 14 years old)
