Shots Fired at CMPD Detective

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide and ADW detectives are investigating shots being fired at an on-duty police officer. Shortly before 1:00 a.m., Detective S. Shipman with The Firearms Enforcement Unit observed a male exiting Church’s Chicken, located at 1735 W Trade St., through a broken front glass door. The male suspect fled the scene in a dark grey Dodge Charger.

Detective Shipman followed the vehicle. Detective Shipman followed the suspect vehicle while alerting Metro Division officers of the location of the suspect vehicle in an attempt to initiate a traffic stop. The suspect vehicle came to a stop in the 300 block of State St. where the suspect exited his vehicle and fired several times at Detective Shipman. Detective Shipman took evasive actions to avoid being shot; he did not return fire and was uninjured.

The suspect returned to his vehicle and fled the scene. Metro Division officers immediately began pursing the suspect vehicle and lost sight of it shortly thereafter. The suspect is described as a black male, with braided hair, wearing a blue t-shirt and dark shorts. The suspect vehicle is a dark grey Dodge Charger with a NC 30-day tag.
