Man Shot & Killed in the 200 Block of 3rd Street

UPDATE I:  (6/3/11) - Accompanied by family members, Antonio Thompkins turned himself in to detectives tonight at police headquarters at 6:00 p.m.  Once detectives with the Homicide Unit have finished the interview process, he will be transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, where he will remain in their custody.  


UPDATE:  CMPD Homicide Detectives are asking for public assistance in locating 20-year old Antonio Amos Thompkins.  The suspect is wanted for the shooting death of Antwan Terrell Smith who was murdered Sunday morning. Antonio Thompkins (aka Tompkins) is known to frequent the Grier Heights neighborhood and should be considered armed & dangerous!

Thompkins, 20, has 11 arrests in Mecklenburg County under his belt since July of 2008-- including 2 robbery arrests in 2009.  No convictions, however, he does have 3 future court dates for trespassing, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.   This means all his other charges were dropped!

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit and A/D/W Unit are investigating a homicide that occurred in the 200 block of 3rd Street in the Central Division. The call for service came in at 1:08 am on Sunday, May 29, 2011. The homicide victim has been identified as Antwan Terrell SmithLast year, Smith was wanted by CMPD for sexual battery charges.

CMPD Central Division Officers heard shots fired and responded to the 200 block of 3rd Street to discover a male victim shot and deceased.  Based upon initial witness statements, two groups of people became involved in an altercation when a subject from one of the groups produced a handgun and began firing multiple shots. Antwan Smith was struck by gunfire in the head and pronounced deceased on the scene by Medic.

A second subject, Durante Kavon James, was shot in the lower leg and transported to Carolinas Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.  Several witnesses have been transported to police headquarters to be interviewed by detectives. The Helicopter Unit and the K-9 Unit responded to the scene in an attempt to locate the suspect, who fled the area on foot.  Crime Scene Search responded to the scene of the shooting to collect physical evidence.
