Man Shot & Killed on Willard Street

UPDATE:  Alquez Lee Thompson  has been charged with Murder, Interference with an Electronic Monitoring Device, Possession of Handgun by Minor, and Carrying Concealed weapon-Gun. Carolyn Nicole Lilly has been charged with Accessory after the Fact to a Felony and Reginald Eugene Martin has been charged with Accessory after the Fact to a Felony.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit are conducting an investigation into a shooting which left one man dead. The victim was struck by gunfire and collapsed in the front yard of 4617 Willard Street, in the Freedom Division. The call for service was reported at 2:16 p.m., on Thursday, December 08, 2011. The victim has been identified as Craig Allen Leverette Jr.

Freedom Division officers responded to an A/D/W call for service in reference to a male subject who had been shot. When officers arrived on scene, they located Mr. Leverette lying in the front yard of 4617 Willard Street; Mr. Leverette had no previous connection to this address. Based upon initial witness statements and evidence gathered along Willard Street, multiple gunshots were fired near the intersection of Lewiston Avenue and Willard Street.

As additional gunshots were fired, the incident proceeded up Willard Street towards Marble Street. Mr. Leverette was struck by gunfire and collapsed as he ran along Willard Street. Mr. Leverette was transported to Carolinas Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

Detectives are canvassing the area in an effort to determine if there are additional witnesses. This is not a random act of violence; Detectives believe that those involved in this shooting were previously known to each other. As information develops, it will be released by the CMPD Public Affairs Office. Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence. The K-9 Unit and the Helicopter responded as well to aid in the investigation.
