Man Shot & Killed in Grier Heights Community

WANTED: Edward Hicks
UPDATE III:   Monday, May 28, 2012 8:30am-  Earlier this morning, Detectives with the CMPD Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) responded to a Crime Stoppers tip and located Edward Durant Hicks.

Mr. Hicks was located at the Knights Inn at 7901 Nation Ford Road, and was arrested without incident. He was taken to police headquarters to be interviewed by Homicide Detectives and then transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail, where he will remain in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. Mr. Hicks remained on the run for two weeks.

UPDATE II:  Homicide Unit Detectives signed warrants on Edward Durant Hicks for his involvement in the murder of Nakio Terrill Cousart. The Violent Criminal Apprehension Team is actively searching for Mr. Hicks at this time. He is considered armed and dangerous.

UPDATE: The victim has been identified as Nakio Terrill Cousart.  Mr. Cousart is Charlotte's 19th murder victim of 2012.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit are conducting an investigation into a shooting that occurred at 3101 Zircon Street which left Nakio Cousart dead. The call for service came in at 7:00pm on Saturday, May 12, 2012.   Zircon Street is located in the Grier Heights Community.

Providence Division patrol officers responded to Zircon Street in reference to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service. Upon arrival, they located a male subject suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The male was pronounced deceased on scene.  Detectives are currently canvassing the area to determine if anyone saw or heard anything in the moments leading up to the shooting that will aid in the investigation.

Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Members of the Vice and Gang Unit as well as the Robbery and Firearms Unit responded to assist with the investigation. Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Homicide Prosecution Team responded to the scene as well.

Detectives have stated that a possible suspect vehicle was seen fleeing the scene. The vehicle is described as a blue SUV (possibly a Ford model).
