CMPD Investigating a Murder in the Eastway Division

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit is conducting an investigation into a homicide that occurred at 719 E. 17th Street.

On Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at 1:06 p.m. Eastway Division patrol officers responded to E. 17th Street in reference to an assault with a deadly weapon call with injuries. Upon arrival officers located a male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim, identified as Matthew Thomas Hawkins was transported to CMC Main by Medic with life threatening injuries.

A second victim, Suzanne Piri, DOB: 02/08/1970, was also at the residence but was not injured. The suspect entered the residence during an apparent robbery attempt. The suspect is described as a dark skinned black male wearing a dark t-shirt and long dark shorts. He was last seen on foot towards N. McDowell Street.

The K-9 and Helicopter Units responded and attempted to track the suspect. Patrol units circulated the area but officers were unable to locate the suspect. Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence.

**On July 12, 2012 at approximately 9:45 p.m. the victim died as a result of his injuries.**

This investigation is in its early stages. As additional information develops, it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.
