UPDATE: Providence Road has been reopened for traffic after NC Highway Patrol conducted a two-hour investigation of the scene.
Unconfirmed witness reports say a car and van were involved in a head-on collision, killing the northbound driver.
Around 7:00 this morning an automobile accident occurred on NC 16 between Weddington and Waxhaw. The accident killed one motorist, according to emergency crews, and has shut down Providence Road.
The NC Highway Patrol is currently investigating the accident, meaning Providence Road road will probably stay closed for several hours.
Travelers from Waxhaw heading into Charlotte will need to find an alternate route.
