Crime Victim Story: A.H.

I think it is important to share what crime victims go through and the terrific pain and suffering they endure. It really bugs me to know that in Mecklenburg County, the criminals who are caught- walk away with plea deals and minimum sentences. They end up back on the streets to commit more crimes and victimize more people.

Here is an e-mail I received from "A.H." who was brutally attacked in a robbery. Thank you for sharing your story!

..............."I came across your blog and saw that you wanted peoples stories about being victims of crime in Charlotte. My name is A.H. and last July I was attacked and robbed by 5-8 teenagers in the parking garage of the apartment I used to live at in downtown Charlotte's Gateway Village. The amount of money the attackers got from me was insignificant- $60 or $70 cash, however, I was left with a broken jaw & I had to contact police/medics myself even though the parking garage's security people were right in front of me! They wouldnt even tell me the address to the garage (I was loopy as I had been knocked unconscious) and on top of being left to get help myself! The security's main plea to me was to calm down my girlfriend who was hysterical from having witnessed the beating I had endured."

"At this point, I have had my jaw reconstructed with titanium and screws. It works pretty good but not like before. I've accumulated around $27,000 worth of bills. $14,500 was comped by Carolinas Medical Center. I have placed a claim to the NC Department of Crime Control & the NC Public Safety Victims Compensation Fund. My claim was to be heard on the 7th of this month so I am waiting for the letter to show up at any time with the response. I am ready for this all to be behind me and for my credit to be ok again"........
