Police fight crime from roof

Police in Pineville are attempting to catch car thieves from the rooftop of buildings. Police officers are climbing on to the roofs of local businesses in order to obtain a bird's eye view of parking lots. They are keeping a sharp eye on the cars using night-vision goggles and binoculars.

According to a report by
WBTV, Officer Nick French said car break-ins are way up this June. So far, there have been 36 incidents. Thieves are using flat-head screwdrivers to punch the lock out. They are specifically targeting Hondas and Acuras and newer model Ford trucks.

By being up on the roof, cops can see the criminals at work much better than they would be able to see from a patrol car on the ground. Police told us they will be on rooftops all around Pineville and they have a good description of the cars the suspects are driving. They will be passing out brochures in the parking lots and yhey are urging people to keep valuables out of their vehicles-or at least put them in the trunk.
