Indecent Liberties Charge for School Officer

This morning, Concord police arrested Jeffrey L. Efird, 36, a school resource officer on one count of taking indecent liberties with a student. Police say about two weeks ago a female student told school authorities Efird inappropriately touched her while on school grounds, prompting an investigation by the Concord Police Department.

Authorities aren't saying when the incident happened, just that it wasn't this school year. Efird, who has been a Concord police officer for seven years, is now on administrative leave. Concord Police Chief Merl Hamilton says there is nothing in Efird's past that would point to this type of behavior.

"This is a very unfortunate and embarrassing situation for the police department. Mr. Efird was entering his fourth year at the school and has a very good record," he said.

Police aren't saying how the officer knew the girl or why she the accusation is now coming to light, but they said they don't believe any other charges will be filed. Efird has bonded out of jail. Considering his clean record, if Efird pleads guilty or is found guilty he'll face probation and up to 15 months in prison. Source: WSOC-TV
