UPDATE: 9/14/07: Jerry Smith, 49, turned himself in to police for committing the BB&T bank robbery. He is charged with common law robbery and remains in the Mecklenburg County jail on $50,000 secured bond.
The FBI & CMPD are investigating a bank robbery that occurred this morning at the BB&T Bank located on South College Street. Police say the suspect initially entered the bank at approximately 9:10 am and spoke with a bank employee about opening an account. The suspect then left the bank.
The suspect returned to the bank at 9:21 and presented one of the bank tellers with a note indicating he was in possession of a bomb. No weapon or explosive device was observed or displayed during the course of the robbery. The suspect fled the bank on foot in an unknown direction with an undisclosed amount of money. There were no injuries as a result of the robbery.
The suspect is described as a black male with a medium-brown skin, approximately 5’6” to 5’7”, 200 to 210 pounds, medium to large build and 45-50 years of age. The suspect had a shaved head and no facial hair. At the time of the robbery, the suspect was wearing beige-colored pants and a black tee shirt that had the image of a gold-colored chain/necklace and a dollar sign ($) printed on the front of the tee shirt.
