CMPD Investigating Homicide on Catherine Simmons Ave

UPDATE: 8-22-08: Vanessa Hines turned herself into police.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Detectives are investigating the murder of 14-year old Ashante Mayfield.

Metro Division officers responded to a call for someone shot and located the victim lying along the sidewalk on Catherine Simmons Avenue, near Custer St. Medic was called to the scene and the victim was transported to CMC where she died a short time later as a result of the injuries sustained in the shooting.

Homicide Detectives have signed warrants in this case on Vanessa Hines. Detectives are investigating the possibility that she fled the scene on a CATS bus. Initial indications by witnesses are that the suspect and the victim had some type of altercation moments before the shooting.

Information received by officers indicates that people in the area may have attempted to hinder this investigation by removing the gun used to commit this murder. We ask the public to help identify those who may be attempting to shield a killer.
