Homicide Detectives Investigating a Murder on Polk St

WANTED: Sidney Mays
UPDATE: A murder warrant has been obtained and CMPD Homicide Detectives are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Sidney O’Neal Mays.

He is described as a black male, 30 years old, 5’9”, 175-180 pounds, bald, goatee, no front teeth   He was last seen wearing a gray tank top and blue jeans, possibly wearing a black ball cap with white lettering.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department A/D/W and Homicide Units are investigating a shooting at the 1500 block of Polk Street in the Metro Division. The call for service came in at 8:32pm.  The victim has been identified as Clarence James Carter.

Metro Division officers responded to an ADW call for service in reference to a male subject being shot subsequent to a neighborhood dispute. When officers arrived on scene, they located the victim lying on the ground suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. Medic arrived and transported the victim to Carolinas Medical Center with life threatening injuries. The victim was pronounced by medical staff at the hospital a short time later.

Witnesses to the shooting have been transported to police headquarters for questioning. Officers located a person of interest and that person has been transported to police headquarters as well for questioning. At this early point in the investigation, it is apparent that this is not a random act of violence as the deceased and the shooter were known to each other.
