Cold Case Detectives Solve 2004 Murder

Hayward Dixon
Earlier today, Detectives with the CMPD Violent Criminal Apprehension Team arrested Hayward Lee Dixon for the murder of William Thomas McDowell, who was found shot to death on July 5, 2004. The arrest took place at 1019 Saratoga Drive.

Detectives with the CMPD Homicide Unit’s Cold Case Squad were able to re-examine the case when a witness recently came forward with information that led to follow-up interviews with other witnesses.  As a result of the continuing investigation, Detectives charged Mr. Dixon with the murder of Mr. McDowell.

The shooting stemmed from an earlier confrontation between Mr. Dixon and Mr. McDowell.  When officers arrived on the scene, 224 Jones Street, they found Mr. McDowell lying unresponsive in the driveway area. Mr. McDowell was transported to Carolinas Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.  Mr. Dixon is currently in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, being held without bond.
