Murder Charges Dropped Against 2011 Speed Street Shooter/Killer

Antonio Thompkins, 21
On May 29, 2011, Antonio Thompkins shot and killed Antwan Terrell Smith and shot another person in the 200 block of 3rd Street in the CMPD Central Division. The incident occurred a couple of hours after Speed Street shut down.

Yesterday, Mecklenburg County Prosecutors dropped the murder and assault charges against Thompkins, stating they were unable to try the case with uncooperative witnesses and lack of evidence.

“We cannot try cases without the help of individuals who witness criminal acts,” District Attorney Andrew Murray stated in explaining why the charges were dropped against Antonio Thompkins. “We simply don’t have the evidence. It is unfortunate we cannot proceed in this case for the families of the victims and the people of this community.”

Thompkins is no stranger to the criminal justice system. Prior to his arrest, he had 11 arrests in Mecklenburg County under his belt since July of 2008, including 2 robbery arrests in 2009.
