CMPD Detectives Arrest Two Armed Robbery Suspects

Robbery Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have arrested Laquentin Winchester and Curry Evans for an armed robbery they committed in the North Tryon Division.

On Tuesday, July 5, 2012, at approximately 3:30 p.m., officers responded to an armed robbery call for service at 6404 the Plaza. When officers arrived the victim stated he had just purchased a money order at a nearby check cashing establishment and was walking home.

The victim stated that the suspects pulled up to him in a grey car, got out of the vehicle, and grabbed him before demanding money at gunpoint. The suspects went through the victims pockets and removed his property without his consent before one of the suspects produced a bat and struck the victim in the head. The suspects got back into the vehicle and immediately left the scene in the direction of W.T. Harris Blvd.


A nearby witness got the tag number of the vehicle and forwarded the information to officers on the scene. Officers worked with robbery detectives and through the course of the investigation the suspects were indentified. Both suspects were arrested on Tuesday, July 10, 2012. Laquentin Winchester has been charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon. Curry Evans was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.

These arrests illustrate how critical it is for the community and police to work together. Had it not been for this engaged witness who got the vehicle’s tag number these two dangerous suspects would likely still be in our community free to victimize other members of our community.

CMPD Conducting Murder Investigation in North Tryon Division

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit are conducting a murder investigation at 111 Eastway Drive in the North Tryon Division. The call for service came in at 5:52 a.m., on Thursday, July 5, 2012. The victim has been positively identified as Francisco Morales Sanchez.

North Tryon Division patrol officers responded to an call for service in reference to a male subject lying on the ground at the rear of the business. When officers arrived on scene, they located a Hispanic male lying face down in the grassy area; he was pronounced deceased on scene. Detectives will continue to canvass the area to determine if anyone has information that will aid in the investigation.

Detectives Conducting a Homicide Investigation in the North Tryon Division

UPDATE: Arnold Jerard Thomas was arrested this morning in Columbia, SC, by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) without incident. The extradition process will begin immediately, but there is no current timetable on Thomas’ return to Mecklenburg County.

Additionally, it was determined that Arnold Jerard Thomas and Dantonio Gerrick Hamilton were known acquaintances, and that this incident was not a random act of violence.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation at 2520 Lanecrest Drive in the North Tryon division. The call for service came in at 3:32am, on Saturday, June 23, 2012. The victim has been identified as Dantonio Gerrick Hamilton.

North Tryon patrol officers responded to an A/D/W call in reference to a subject shot in an apartment complex parking lot. When officers arrived on scene, they located a male subject in the parking lot suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced deceased by Medic at 3:43am.

According to witnesses the suspect is described as a black male with short dreadlocks wearing a black t-shirt and jean shorts. He was last seen fleeing towards Barringer Road. The K-9 Unit responded and attempted to track the suspect. Patrol units circulated the area but officers have been unable to locate the suspect at this time.

Detectives with the Homicide Unit are canvassing the neighborhood to determine whether there are any witnesses to this incident. The investigation is in its early stages. As additional information develops, it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.

CMPD Captures Armed Robbery Suspect

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have arrested Gilbert Brook Francois for his role in a robbery he committed at the Family Dollar store located at 6701 N. Tryon Street.

On Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at approximately 9:00 a.m., North Tryon Division officers responded to the store concerning a robbery call for service. The victim, who is a store employee stated that he approached the suspect after he observed him shoplifting.   The victim stated the suspect removed several stolen items belonging to the store from his clothing and threw the items on the ground.

The suspect then reportedly produced a gun and pointed it at the victim before pulling the trigger. The weapon never fired and the suspect ran from the area. A detailed description of the suspect and direction of his travel were broadcast through communications.

Officers located the suspect a short time later. The victim positively identified Gilbert Francois as the man who was involved in the robbery.   Gilbert was arrested and charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and attempted murder. Francois has a lengthy criminal history in Mecklenburg County. Some of his prior arrests include: resisting public officer, assault with a deadly weapon and carrying a concealed weapon.

The CMPD stated they will continue to work at removing these type of dangerous individuals from society before they have an opportunity to prey on any additional members of our community.

Two Arrested for Breaking & Entering on Bearwood Ave

At approximately 10:30 a.m., CMPD officers were dispatched to a breaking and entering in progress call for service of a storage shed in the 4100 block of Bearwood Avenue.  The first officer who arrived on the scene encountered the two suspects behind the storage building.

Each of the suspects were in possession of a motorcycle when the officer approached them. The officer determined that both motorcycles the suspects were in possession of were reported stolen the night before in the University City area.

The officer was able to place both suspects under arrest without incident and recover the property that was reported stolen, he also stopped these property thieves while they were in commission of another crime before they victimized an additional member of our community.

North Tryon Division officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department arrested Devin Alexander and Jaquan Carter for their involvement in a recent breaking and entering case.  Both suspects were taken into custody and charged with two counts of larceny of motor vehicle, possession of stolen goods and breaking and entering with force.  This arrest marks Devin Alexander's 6th arrest in the past 3 years.

Man & Woman Found Stabbed on Ginger Lane

UPDATE II:  Homicide detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have signed murder warrants on Maria Dejesus Turcios. Detectives determined that this was not a random act of violence as the victim and suspect were known acquaintances and the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute.   Maria Dejesus Turcios is currently in the hospital being treated for injuries she sustained during the incident. Once she has been discharged from the hospital she will be transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail.

UPDATE: The victim has been identified as Ricardo Alvarado Torres.  Detectives continue to ask for the public’s assistance in developing information in this case. The female victim remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit and Assault with Deadly Weapon Unit are conducting an investigation into a stabbing in the 2300 block of Ginger Lane, which left one man dead and a female transported with life threatening injuries. The call for service came in at 2:08 a.m. on Sunday, March 18, 2012. 

North Tryon Division patrol officers responded to Ginger Lane in reference to an A/D/W with two subjects that were stabbed.   Upon arrival, they located a male and female inside of a vehicle, both with multiple stab wounds.  The male subject was pronounced deceased on scene. The female was transported to CMC Main.  CMPD Detectives are in the process of canvassing the complex to determine if anyone heard or saw anything in the moments leading up to the stabbing that will aid in the investigation.

Man Shot & Killed on Lambeth Drive

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Homicide Unit Detectives are currently conducting an investigation into a shooting that occurred in the North Tryon Division at the 432 Lambeth Drive. The call for service was reported at 8:46 p.m., on February 23, 2012. The victim has been identified, pending family notification, his name will be released.

North Tryon Division officers responded to Lambeth Drive to investigate a shots fired call for service. When officers arrived on scene, they located a male subject suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Medic arrived on scene and pronounced the victim deceased. Based on initial statements, residents heard a gunshot and located the subject.

CMPD Investigating Domestic Stabbing Death in Hidden Valley

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department A/D/W and Homicide Units are conducting an investigation into a domestic violence call, which left Francis Xavier Stewart deceased. The incident took place at 4718 Cinderella Road in the North Tryon Division. The call for service came in at 12:15 am, on Sunday October 30, 2011.

North Tryon Division officers received a call for service in reference to a male subject that had been stabbed by his wife. When officers arrived, they located the victim suffering from a stab wound. Medic arrived and pronounced the victim deceased on scene. The victim and suspect were known to each other, this is not a random act of violence. Detectives are not looking for any additional suspects.

Clinicians with the Child Development-Community Policing (CDCP) Program were dispatched and responded to the Law Enforcement Center because children were present during the incident. The CDCP is a partnership between the CMPD and Mecklenburg County Provided Services Organization.

CMPD Arrests Suspects who Robbed Kings Cleaners and Launderette

UPDATE:  The first suspect in this case has been identified as Dapatrick Richardson.  Richardson has been charged with Robbery With a Dangerous Weapon, Conspiracy, Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon, Possession of Stolen Firearm, Possession of Stolen Vehicle, Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Law Enforcement Officer and Resisting Arrest. * Richardson was previously convicted of robbery with a dangerous weapon in Cabarrus County on 03/16/2005.

The second suspect has been identified as Dequrius Greene. He has been charged with Robbery With a Dangerous Weapon, Conspiracy, Felony Flee to Elude, Possession of Stolen Vehicle and Reckless Driving.

Detectives from the Firearms Division are evaluating this case for possible prosecution at the federal level.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are investigating an armed robbery that occurred this afternoon around 3:30 pm. North Tryon Division officers responded to 632 West Sugar Creek Road concerning an armed robbery of Kings Cleaner and Launderette. It was reported that two robbery suspects got into vehicle and fled the location in the direction of the Hidden Valley neighborhood.

Dequrius Greene

A short time later, a North Tryon Division officer located the suspects’ vehicle on Spring Garden Lane. The officer activated his emergency lights and siren and attempted to conduct a vehicle stop. The suspect operating the vehicle refused to stop and subsequently lost control of the vehicle and struck a parked unoccupied car at a home located at 1500 Pondella Drive.

The suspect who was operating the vehicle was immediately taken into custody. The passenger suspect jumped and ran into a wooded area at Spring Garden Lane and Pondella Drive. Officers pursued the suspect on foot through the heavily wooded area and indicated the suspect fired several shots. The passenger suspect was apprehended a short time later in the wooded area.  The gun he was carrying was recovered at the scene of his arrest.

Robbery Unit Detectives are on the scene investigating the incident. Homicide Detectives are also present investigating whether the fleeing suspect attempted to fire shots at officers.

CMPD Investigating Domestic Homicide on Perth Court

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit and A/D/W Unit are conducting an investigation into a shooting that occurred at 4682 Perth Court, located in the North Tryon Division. The shooting left two people deceased. The victims have been identified as Edris Gbarlee Juyenneh Dickson and Darron Orlando Davis. 

North Tryon Division officers responded to the Park Creek Apartments to investigate multiple calls to 911 that gunshots had been fired inside an apartment. When officers arrived on the scene, they located a male and a female inside the residence, both suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The male victim was transported with life threatening injuries by Medic to Carolinas Medical Center. The female was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic.

Based upon information and evidence gathered on the scene, the female shot her boyfriend multiple times and then turned the gun on herself. In addition, at the time of the shooting, a female called 911 and stated that she had shot her boyfriend; she then hung up the phone.

At this time, there is no reason to believe that there is anyone else involved in this shooting. This incident was not a random act of violence. Detectives with both the Homicide Unit and A/D/W Unit are currently canvassing the complex in an effort to determine if there are any additional witnesses yet to come forward.

North Tryon Division officers responded to the Brookwood Inn to investigate the report of a person shot. When officers arrived on scene, they located an unresponsive subject suffering from an apparent gunshot wound; Medic pronounced the victim deceased on scene.

Based upon initial witness statements, a subject was seen fleeing the area on foot.  Witnesses have been identified and are cooperating with detectives. At this initial stage of the investigation, detectives are canvassing the area to determine if there are any additional witnesses to this incident.

Victim Shoots & Kills Home Invasion Suspect on Finchley Dr

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit are conducting an investigation into a home invasion, robbery, assault and subsequent shooting which left one man dead at 2404 Finchley Drive.  The call for service was reported at 9:36 am.  The suspect/victim has been identified as Jonathan Kendrell Boddie.

According to CMPD, North Tryon Division officers responded to Finchley Drive to investigate the report of one person who had been shot.  When officers arrived on scene, they located an unresponsive male inside the residence.  He was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic.

Based upon initial witness statements, the resident was sitting outside the house in a vehicle when he was approached by two armed black males.  The suspects forced the male inside the residence at gunpoint and began assaulting him.  When the female resident heard the commotion, she fired a firearm at the suspects, killing one of them.  The second suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction of travel. Patrol officers and detectives are currently searching for the second suspect.

The male who was assaulted was treated on scene by Medic and transported to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The female victim was uninjured during the incident. Both victims will be interviewed by Homicide Unit Detectives.

CMPD Investigating Stabbing on Dove Tree Lane

UPDATE: Homicide Unit Detectives have charged the suspect, Rudicendo Duarte, for the murder of Mr. Zamora. The stabbing was precipitated by a verbal disagreement between two separate groups that led to a physical altercation. The physical altercation led to a fight between all subjects involved (approx. six individuals).

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit and ADW Unit are conducting an investigation into a homicide which occurred in the parking lot area of 6223 Dove Tree Lane in the North Tryon Division. The call for service came in at 1:42 a.m., on Saturday, June 18, 2011. The victim has been identified as Mario Rocha Zamora.  

North Tryon Division officers responded to a 911 call in reference to two subjects who had been stabbed in the parking lot of the Woodland Hollow Apartments. When responding officers arrived on scene, they located two male subjects who had been stabbed.

Mario Zamora was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic; The victim who received the non-life threatening injury, Edwin Garcia, was transported to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Multiple witnesses have been transported to police headquarters to be interviewed. A small gray car was seen leaving the scene, occupied by at least one Hispanic male.

Felon Commits Robbery on Electronic Monitoring Release

On May 5, 2011, at approx. 2:00 pm, CMPD North Tryon Division Officers responded to a report of an armed robbery in the parking lot of a Raceway gas station, located at 1125 W. Sugar Creek Road.

When officers arrived they met with a 47-year old man and his 21-year old son who stated a male subject approached them in the parking lot with a handgun and demanded the their money.  The victims complied with the suspect and got the tag number of the car the suspect fled in. Officers ran the tag number and received information which connected Cumar Craig Howard to the car. 

CMPD Robbery Detectives saw that Howard was released from jail last year on 'electronic monitoring' at the time of the robbery so he voluntarily came to police headquarters.  Cumar Howard denied he was even in the area at the time of the robbery but the system indicated otherwise so Howard was taken into custody and charged with Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon.  This is Cumar Howard’s ninth arrest in Mecklenburg County since 2008.  Some of his prior charges include Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, Breaking and Entering with Force, Assault on a Female and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

Subway Worker Shoots Armed Robber on W Sugar Creek Rd

CMPD Homicide and Robbery Unit Detectives are conducting an investigation into a robbery-homicide that occurred at a Subway store, located at 626 West Sugar Creek Rd. The incident was reported at 6:58 pm on Monday, January 17, 2011.

CMPD North Tryon Division officers responded to multiple calls for service in reference to gunshots fired. Upon officers’ arrival, they located Jamal Steven McKenith lying at the end of the strip mall suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased on the scene. The second robber has been identified as Demetrius Nathaniel Thomas.

Based on initial statements from witnesses, McKenith and Thomas entered the Subway armed with handguns- with the attempt to rob the establishment. An altercation ensued when the employee did not comply with the suspects’ demands; the employee fired his weapon, striking both suspects.

McKenith and Thomas fled the scene. Jamal McKenith was found deceased at the end of the strip mall. Shortly after the shooting, Demetrius Thomas arrived at Carolinas Medical Center suffering from a gunshot wound. He has undergone surgery and will be jailed once he recovers from his gunshot wound.

The employee was not injured during this incident and was transported to the Law Enforcement Center to be interviewed. Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to collect physical evidence. The K-9 Unit responded to the scene, along with A/D/W and Robbery Detectives, and the Gang Unit.

Repeat Offender Murders Man During Breaking & Entering

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit Detectives are investigating a murder that occurred at 2114 Purser Drive in the North Tryon Division. A 'check the welfare' call was received by 911 operators at 1:16 pm on January 10, 2011.

CMPD North Tryon Division officers responded to the residence, entered the house and discovered a male victim unconscious and suffering from an apparent stab wound. Officers saw signs of a struggle inside the residence. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene and has been positively identified as Christopher Julian Radok.

The evidence in this case points to the fact that the suspect, Antoine D. Young, broke into Mr. Radok’s home to steal and attacked Mr. Radok as he arrived home from work. Mr. Radok died of injuries which he sustained during the attack. Homicide Unit Detectives have charged 29-year old Antoine Young with murder, robbery and larceny theft of a motor vehicle. Detectives believe that Mr. Young acted alone during the commission of this crime and are not currently seeking additional suspects.

According to the NC Dept of Corrections website, Antoine Dion Young has a criminal history dating back to 1998, when he assaulted a public official and received probation at age 17. In 2000, he was busted with stolen goods in Union County and spent two months in jail. In 2002, he was convicted of several drug charges and again was sentenced to two months in jail.

In 2006, Young was convicted of two counts of possession of drugs and was sentenced to six months in prison in April of 2007. Since his release from jail in October 2008, CMPD has arrested Antoine Young seven times for various crimes including; larceny, drug possession, probation violations, breaking & entering and possession of a firearm by a felon.

** Detectives are currently looking for the victim’s vehicle- a 2001 Jeep Cherokee, gray in color. The vehicle has a NC Plate #: WPH-5769.

Man Shot after SWAT Standoff

* 3 Counts of Assault with a Firearm on a Law Enforcement Officer

Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit Detectives and Internal Affairs are conducting an investigation into a shooting that occurred at 5512 Snow White Lane in the North Tryon Division. The incident was reported at 9:14 a.m. on Thursday, November 25, 2010.

North Tryon Division officers responded to a suicidal threat call for service. Upon officer’s arrival, the subject was standing inside his residence with a handgun. Officers retreated and contacted the on-duty supervisor, who is also a SWAT Negotiator. The on-duty supervisor arrived on scene and spoke with subject by phone.

At 10:27 a.m. SWAT officers responded and took command of the scene. The SWAT Negotiator kept the subject on the phone while SWAT established a perimeter. The subject then exited his residence with the phone in one hand, and the gun in the other. The negotiator and officers on the scene gave continuous verbal commands for the subject to put down the gun. The subject then lowered the phone and raised the handgun and advanced towards the officers. One of the officers fired his weapon twice and the subject fell to the ground, suffering from two gunshot wounds. The subject was alert and conscious while en-route to Carolinas Medical Center.

Investigators with the Internal Affairs Unit are on scene conducting a parallel investigation. It is standard procedure for Internal Affairs to investigate any time an officer discharges their weapon to ensure all CMPD policies and procedures have been followed. Alert neighbor helps officers nab residential B&E suspects

On November 11, 2010, North Tryon Division officers responded to the 1700 block of Purser Drive after a neighbor called 911 stating they observed three suspicious people casing an unoccupied home. The suspicious trio took off before officers arrived.

Once officers got on the scene, they observed the rear door and window of the home had been broken. An alert neighbor observed the suspects leave the scene and told officers their whereabouts. CMPD Officers located the suspects in the 800 block of Eastway Drive. The neighbor positively identified the suspects. Stolen property from the home was also recovered from the suspects.

Tyshaun Doral Lee and Nadan Toure were both arrested and charged with Breaking and Entering and Larceny.

This case illustrates the importance of community involvement.

CMPD Homicide Detectives Conducting Murder/Suicide Investigation

Charlotte-Mecklenburg ADW and Homicide Unit Detectives are conducting a homicide investigation at 2429 Anna Garrison Road in the North Tryon Division. The incident was reported at 1:04 a.m., on Sunday, October 3, 2010. The victim and suspect have been positively identified as Rebecca Ann Robertson and Barry Lynndell Leake.

North Tryon Division officers responded to a call for service in reference to two subjects suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Upon officer’s arrival, they located a male and female subject inside the residence and pronounced them deceased on scene. North Tryon officers’ immediately cordoned off the crime scene.

Based on the initial investigation, it appears that the suspect fatally shot the female victim and then shot himself and died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. There were six children and another couple inside the home at the time of the shooting. Three of the children belonged to the female victim and the remaining children belong to the victim’s sister, who was also in the home at the time of the incident. Child Development through Community Policing (CDCP) were called to the residence, along with the Mobile Crisis Unit to assist.

North Tryon officers had previously responded to this address regarding a domestic violence incident. Officers found no signs of injury to the victim. The victim stated that she would respond to the Magistrate’s Office to attempt to obtain a warrant. After a follow up by the reporting officer, the victim advised that she would not seek a warrant and had moved out of the home.

A/D/W, Homicide, Special Victims, and the Gang Units are all on scene assisting with the investigation. Crime Scene Search is on scene collecting and photographing physical evidence.

CMPD Investigating Officer Involved Shooting

Case Update: The subject of this investigation has been identified as Terrence Darden.

Homicide Unit Detectives have obtained warrants on Mr. Darden for the following offenses: ADW-Law Enforcement Officer, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, PWISD-Marijuana, Carrying a Concealed Weapon and Resist-Law Enforcement Officer.

Mr. Darden remains at CMC; once he is released, he will be transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. As previously stated, Detectives did speak to Mr. Darden at CMC who admitted to having the gun. Mr. Darden was armed and displaying the gun during the foot pursuit

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit Detectives are conducting an investigation into an officer involved shooting which left one person in critical condition. The incident took place in the common area of Timber Ridge Apartments, off the 7200 block of Barrington Drive in the North Tryon Division. The incident was called in to CMPD Communications via a CMPD Officer’s handheld radio at 8:22 p.m., on Thursday, July 1, 2010.

Three members of the North Tryon Division’s Focused Mission Team made voluntary contact with a subject in the common area of Timber Ridge Apartments. Based upon initial statements from officers at the scene, as they were running after the subject, the subject produced a handgun. At that time, Officer Thomas Wishon fired his service weapon at the subject. The subject received a single gunshot wound to the upper body; detectives are still trying to determine whether the bullet entered the subject’s chest or back.

The subject was taken into custody and officers notified headquarters to send Medic to the scene. Medic began treating the subject’s injuries on scene and transported him to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment of his wounds. Homicide Detectives were able to speak with the subject while at CMC. A firearm was recovered on the scene and collected as evidence.

The investigation is in its initial stages. The involved police officers and civilian witnesses still need to be interviewed at police headquarters. As additional information develops, including the name of the subject who was shot, it will be released through the CMPD Public Affairs Office. No CMPD Officers were injured during this incident.

Crime Scene Search responded to the scene and to the hospital to collect physical evidence. Detectives with the Gang Unit and the ADW Unit are on-scene assisting; the Helicopter Unit responded to the scene as well.

Officer Wishon will be placed on paid administrative leave as per department policy when involved in a shooting incident. Officer Wishon was hired on May 15, 2006, and is currently assigned to the North Tryon Division as a member of their Focused Mission Team.
