CMPD Warns of Increased Car Burglaries

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police issued a warning message to local residents regarding the growth of car burglaries in the southwest region of Mecklenburg.

According to police, neighborhoods targeted include those along Steele Creek Road, South Tryon Street, and Moss Road. Wallets, purses, cash, and electronics have been stolen from vehicles left unlocked in those communities.

To prevent your vehicle from being burglarized, be sure to remove any valuables when parking at home or around town. Any suspicious activity should be reported to authorities as soon as possible by calling Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600 or Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department at (704) 336-7600.

CMPD Opens New Steele Creek Office

A new police station is opening Wednesday in Mecklenburg's Steele Creek Division. CMPD is holding an opening ceremony at the new location at 2:30 this afternoon. Police chief Monroe is scheduled to appear along with other county and city officials.

The station is located at South Tryon Street and Westinghouse Boulevard and has the capacity for 155 police officers. Steele Creek Division's Shopton Road offices will be replaced by the new location, which is around 12,000 square feet.

Locals hope the new office location will deter criminals in that area. Year-to-date, the Steele Creek Division has been home to 249 violent crimes and 1863 property crimes, a 0.7% increase from this time last year.

Detectives Conducting a Homicide Investigation in the Steele Creek Division

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation at 11339 Red Hickory Lane in the Steele Creek Division. The call for service came in at 7:28 p.m., on Tuesday, July 24, 2012.  The deceased has been positively identified as Alfred Michael Smith.  This is Charlotte's 31st homicide of 2012.

Steele Creek Division patrol officers responded to a call for service placed by a concerned neighbor in regards to the welfare of the male who resides at 11339 Red Hickory Lane. The male subject was found deceased when the neighbor entered the home to check on him. The neighbor then exited the house and called 911 to report the incident. There are obvious signs of foul play at the crime scene. Detectives with the Homicide Unit are canvassing the neighborhood to determine if anyone has any information that will aid the investigation.

The investigation is in its early stages, as additional information develops, it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.  Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence. CMPD Recovers Over $1 Million in Stolen Merchandise

Steele Creek Division Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have arrested Daniel V. Reyes on outstanding warrants stemming from a large amount of stolen property he was in possession of that was stolen in several commercial breaking and entering cases.

More than three months ago, Steele Creek detectives began an investigation into a series of commercial B&E cases that had similar trends. In those cases, the suspects disabled security alarms after business hours, forced their way into the establishments and removed large quantities of merchandise. The merchandise ranged from musical instruments, electronics, clothing, hunting and outdoor equipment and even included ballistic vests along with a multitude of other items.

Information gathered during this investigation revealed that the stolen items were being transported and stored in a building located at 1124 Rosewood Avenue in Kannapolis, NC.   On Thursday, April 5, 2012, investigators executed a search warrant of the building. During the search, investigators discovered a marijuana growing operation and recovered a large quantity of stolen merchandise with an estimated value of one-million dollars.

Information and evidence gathered during the investigation revealed that Daniel V. Reyes was involved in this series of property crimes and was selling the stolen property on Craigslist.  Reyes has been charged with four counts of possession of stolen property stemming from cases:

• B&E- Barefoot Archery- 4410 Old Pineville Rd
• B&E- SafGard- 2900 Westinghouse Blvd.
• B&E- American Army Surplus- 5226 E. Independence Blvd.
• B&E- Diver’s Supply- 800 Clanton Rd.

Reyes also had outstanding arrest warrants in Jefferson County, Kentucky for B&E and Larceny charges at the time of his arrest.   Additionally, detectives have outstanding arrest warrants for Ineido Cepero Aldana and Elias Larosa for their roles in this criminal operation.

Teen Found Dead on Arbroath Court

UPDATE II:   Homicide Unit Detectives have arrested Nicholas Eshaad Wright and charged him with the murder of Aerial Patterson.  He has also been charged with Armed Robbery and is currently in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

UPDATE I:  With the assistance of CMPD's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT), Steele Creek Division officers, and members of Vice and Narcotics; Eddie Yannick Doh, was apprehended and charged with the murder of Ms. Patterson.

Additionally, Eddie Doh was charged with Armed Robbery and Possession of Firearm by Felon and has been transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office where he will remain in their custody.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation at 15129 Arbroath Court, which is located in the Steele Creek Division. The call for service came in at 3:42 am.  The female victim has been positively identified as 17-year old Aerial Patterson.

According to the CMPD, Steele Creek Division officers responded to Arbroath and found Miss Patterson suffering from fatal injuries. She was pronounced deceased on scene.

According to a friend of the victim, she was dropped off at the above address by a friend to meet an unknown person through a pre-arrangement.  When her friend came back to pick up the victim, she was discovered deceased in the yard. The address where the victim was located is an unoccupied residence.

The friend of the victim is cooperating with the investigation and has voluntarily been taken to Police Headquarters to provide a statement. Detectives are canvassing the neighborhood in an effort to identify any witnesses.

CMPD Investigating Homicide at Emerald Bay Apartments

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit Detectives are conducting an investigation into a shooting which left one person deceased. The incident took place at 5013 Cherrycrest Lane, which is located in the Steele Creek Division. The call for service was reported at 8:07pm.  The victim has been positively identified as Keith Deonte Patterson.

Steele Creek Division officers responded to the Emerald Bay Apartments to investigate a report of an ADW. When officers arrived on scene, they located the victim suffering from a gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased on scene. Witnesses have been transported to police headquarters to provide statements. Detectives are canvassing the neighborhood in an effort to identify any additional witnesses and are also looking for a red BMW, occupied by several Hispanic males.

Young Girl Killed in Accidental Shooting on Archdale Drive

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit and Assault with a Deadly Weapon Unit are conducting an investigation into a shooting which left a 4-year old girl dead on Archdale Drive at 1:22 this afternoon.

CMPD Steele Creek Division Officers responded to an apartment at the Highlands Apartment Complex to investigate reports of a shooting with injury.  Officers arrived on the scene to find the CFD and Medic treating a 4-year old girl for a gunshot wound.  She was transported to Carolinas Medical Center where she was pronounced deceased.  

Homicide Detectives are in the process of interviewing the other young children and the adult who was inside the apartment at the time of the shooting.  A total of 5 children, including the victim, were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting with ages ranging from 6 months to 11 years old.

Detectives charged Mr. Erin Melendez with Storing a Firearm in a Manner Accessible to a Minor.  CMPD says they are not looking for any suspects in connection with what is believed to have been an accidental shooting.

Detectives with the Special Victims Division assisted in the investigation as well as clinicians with the Child Development-Community Policing (CDCP) Program. The CDCP is a partnership between the CMPD and Mecklenburg County Provided Services Organization.

Homicide Detectives Investigating Triple Murder on Oak Meadow Ct

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit Detectives are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of three people found deceased at 7915 Oak Meadow Court, Apartment 22. The call for service came in at 12:21 p.m., on Tuesday, August 23, 2011.

The identities of the victims in this case are Lorenzo Fritz Graves, Cheryl Ann Graves and Oznola Ann Graves.

Steele Creek Division officers responded to a call for service to check the welfare placed by a relative of an adult male who resides at the apartment along with his wife and child. When officers arrived on scene, the door was locked. The apartment manager opened the apartment and officers located a man, woman and child deceased.

CMPD Officers pronounced the victims deceased on scene. Their manner of death has yet to be determined. The Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s Office will be responsible for determining the cause of death.  Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to photograph it and collect physical evidence.

Detectives with the Youth Crime, Domestic Violence Unit, along with the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Homicide Prosecution Team also responded to assist with the investigation.

CMPD Detectives make an arrest in Sex Assault case

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Sexual Assault Unit are conducting an investigation into a sexual assault which took place at the Motel 6, located at 131 Red Roof Drive in the Steele Creek Division. The call for service was reported at 11:31 am on August 15, 2011.

Steele Creek Division officers responded to the Motel 6 to investigate the report of a rape. The incident was reported by the motel manager. When officers arrived on scene, they were taken to a room inside the motel where they met the victim. Medic was called to the scene and the victim was transported to Presbyterian Hospital for treatment. The suspect fled the motel in a Ford Mustang, which Steel Creek Division officers located a short distance from the scene.

The suspect Damon Vernard Simpson was taken into custody and has been charged with the following offenses: 2nd Degree Rape (two counts), 1st Degree Kidnapping, Assault by Strangulation, Assault on a Female, ADW/Law Enforcement Officer, Reckless Driving, Felony Flee to Elude Arrest, Resist Public Officer, Speeding, Open Container and Injury to Real Property.

Man Shot on Fairgreen Drive

Detectives with the CMPD Homicide Unit and A/D/W Unit are conducting an investigation into a shooting at 417 Fairgreen Drive in the Steele Creek Division, which left one person critically injured. The call for service was reported at 5:18pm on July 22, 2011.

Steele Creek Division officers responded to 417 Fairgreen Drive to investigate the report of a person shot. When officers arrived on scene, they located a black male in the driveway suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Medic transported the victim to Carolinas Medical Center where he was rushed into surgery upon arrival. Based upon initial witness statements, multiple gunshots were heard outside the residences along Fairgreen Drive.

The victim, who does not reside at the listed address, was discovered lying in the driveway. At this initial stage of the investigation it is apparent that this is not a random act of violence. Detectives are canvassing the neighborhood to determine if there are any additional witnesses to this incident.

Habitual Offender & Robbery Suspect Arrested in Westover Division

CMPD Westover Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department arrested 42-year old Michael Conway on July 5th after he robbed two gas stations.

The first report of a robbery came from the Petro Express located at 605 Clanton Road. The victim told officers that the suspect entered the store and demanded the money from the cash register, implying he had a gun.  The suspect took the cash and got into a taxi before leaving the location.

Approximately five minutes later, another robbery occurred at the Circle-K located at 4001 South Blvd.  The store clerk stated that she was behind the counter when the suspect entered the store and implied he had a gun, and demanded money from the register and again got in to a taxi.

The suspect and vehicle descriptions were identical to those of the prior robbery.  The description was broadcast over the police radio and officers circulated the area looking for the vehicle and/or suspect.  A short time later, Westover Division Officers located a vehicle matching the description and CMPD Steele Creek officers assisted Westover officers as they stopped the taxi on Woodlawn Road.

A witness was transported to the location and identified Michael Conway as the man responsible for the Circle-K robbery.  A search incident to arrest also resulted in officers recovering property that was stolen from the Petro Express robbery.   It was determined that the taxi driver was transporting Mr. Conway was not aware of the suspect’s criminal activity inside the stores.

Michael Conway was charged with Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Common Law Robbery.  Since 2001, Conway has a lengthy NC criminal record including in Mecklenburg County, where he was arrested in 2008 and charged with four counts of robbing a business, one count of robbing an individual and for being a habitual felon.  In May 2011, he was arrested again for conspiring to sell & distribute marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and for resisting an officer.  This guy was just released from prison in April 2011 since his admission on July 7, 2009.  Reformed? I don't think so...

The CMPD says they will continue to work aggressively to remove these type of individuals from society who repeatedly prey on our community.  Excellent communication and coordination between patrol officers in Westover and Steele Creek Divisions in the field and dispatch were critical elements in apprehending this repeat offender before he victimized anyone else.

Woman Hits Three Pedestrians & Kills Two: Charged with Death by Vehicle

UPDATE: After further investigation on this crash, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit has determined that Ms. Bauer was traveling at least 48 MPH in the 25 MPH zone when she stuck the three pedestrians. +

This is a tragic event that should remind all of us to take care while driving! Pay attention to the road! If you cannot do two things at once, PULL OVER-- just use your turn signal while doing so!! (my biggest pet peeve as a 'transplant' is the lack of use of turn signals in Charlotte)

Sharai Bauer, 18, is charged with two counts of death by motor vehicle after she took her eyes off the road to reach down and pick up personal items that fell on her floor board.

CMPD released the following statement: On February 9, 2011 at 11:35 am, Sharai Bauer was operating a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix traveling south on Corsica Forest Drive, a residential street with a posted 25 MPH speed limit.

As Ms. Bauer approached the 13650 block of Corsica Forest Drive, her attention became diverted from the roadway towards the floor board of her vehicle where personal items had fallen. Two adult pedestrians and a child being pushed in a stroller were walking in the roadway, close to the right curb, with traffic. Ms Bauer’s vehicle then struck the three individuals as they were walking with their backs to the vehicle.

Ji Sheng Lu, 66, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Jing Lu, 37, was transported to CMC with life threatening injuries and later died. The one- year old child that was being pushed in the stroller was transported to CMC with serious injuries.

Sharai Marie Bauer was not injured in the crash. She was arrested at the scene and charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle. This crash is still being investigated and further charges could result pending the outcome of the scene reconstruction.

An ongoing focus of the investigation will be the determination of the speed that Ms. Bauer was traveling on this residential street at the times immediately preceding the crash, and during the crash itself. CMPD cannot offer an estimate of the involved vehicle’s speed at this time.

CMPD Arrests Robbery Suspect on Shady Oak Trail

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department arrested Dequavious Joseph on Saturday, January 29, 2011, at approximately 8:00 p.m. after Steele Creek Officers were dispatched to a robbery in progress call in the 7900 block of Shady Oak Trail.

The victim called 911 and stated that an armed man approached him in the parking lot of his apartment complex. The suspect ordered him to get into the trunk of the victims car before the suspect took the victim’s wallet, cell phone and GPS and ran from the scene.

K-9 and the Aviation Unit assisted officers on the ground in locating a man matching the description of the suspect. The victims property was recovered where the suspect was contacted. Dequavious Joseph has been charged with Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and 2nd degree Kidnapping. Anyone with additional information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600

Man Shot & Killed on Lenox Pointe Drive

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit Detectives are conducting a homicide investigation at 8925 Lenox Pointe Drive in the Steele Creek Division. The incident was reported at 6:30 pm, on Thursday, November 18, 2010. The victim has been positively identified as Derek Roman, 26.

CMPD Steele Creek Division officers responded to a call for service placed by a neighbor who noticed that the victim’s apartment door was open. When the neighbor went to the door to see if the victim was home, the neighbor saw the victim inside the apartment and unresponsive. The neighbor then called 911 to request that police come out to investigate. When officers arrived on scene, they located the victim inside his apartment suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic at 6:35 p.m.

The investigation is in its initial stages. Detectives are interviewing residents of the complex to determine if they heard or saw anything suspicious in the hours leading up to the call for service. Crime Scene Search responded to collect physical evidence and photograph the scene.

Sexual Assault Unit Arrests Rape Suspect

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Sexual Assault Unit would like to announce the arrest of Jason Lee Mojica, for a forcible rape that occurred on August 8th, 2007.

The victim in this case reported to police that she was walking in the 7500 block of Forest Point Boulevard when she was approached by two unidentified assailants and forced into the woods where one of the suspects sexually assaulted her.

On March 4 2010, the CMPD Crime Lab contacted the Sexual Assault Unit with identification of the suspect based on biological evidence that was collected. Utilizing this information, along with other evidence in the case, Detectives signed warrants on Mr. Mojica for first degree rape and first degree kidnapping.

CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team was contacted and began actively searching for Mr. Mojica. Information was developed to indicate that Mr. Mojica was in New York . VCAT worked closely with the US Marshal’s Service who arrested Mr. Mojica on Thursday, March 11th in the Bronx .

The Sexual Assault Unit would like to thank the Steele Creek Division, the CMPD Crime Lab, VCAT and the US Marshal’s Service for their assistance in the apprehension of this dangerous offender.

Robbery Detectives Conducting an Investigation on Waterford Lakes Drive

Robbery Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are conducting an investigation into a robbery that took place at 7604 Waterford Lakes Drive at 4:32a.m., in the Steele Creek Division. The victim has been identified as 24-year old Selina Ife Eliza Angel Kuareden-Morris.

Steele Creek Division officers responded to a call for service shortly after 4:30 a.m. in reference to a shooting and upon arrival found the victim lying in the parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound. Medic arrived and transported the victim to Carolinas Medical Center with life threatening injuries. During the investigation, the victim advised Robbery Detectives that she was robbed by two young black males.

Detectives with the Robbery Unit are conducting the investigation. A CMPD K-9 Unit was called to track the suspects but they were not located. Crime Scene Search responded to the scene, photographed and collecting physical evidence.

Ex-Husband Shot in Domestic Violence Dispute

Case Update: Saturday, March 3, 2010: Homicide Detectives determined that the incident was a domestic disturbance involving a dispute between the victim who was the ex-husband and the wife’s current boyfriend.

The victim in this case is identified as Satmar Colmenares, 33. His family has been notified. Detectives worked through out the night interviewing witnesses and processing the scene for physical evidence. No criminal charges are being sought at this time. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit Detectives are conducting an investigation into a domestic violence related shooting which left one person dead. The shooting took place at 6201 Breckfield Court in the Steele Creek Division. The call for service came in at 8:21 p.m., on Friday, March 5, 2010. The deceased has been identified; his name is being withheld pending family notification.

Steele Creek Division officers responded to a call for service placed by the homeowner stating that a known subject, the deceased, came to the house and threatened the resident. When officers arrived at the home, they located the deceased lying outside the residence on the front porch suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Medic pronounced the deceased on scene. Based on initial witness statements, the male resident was home with his girlfriend, who is the former wife of the deceased. The deceased arrived at the home and began threatening them.

A struggle ensued and during the altercation, the deceased suffered a fatal gunshot wound. The residents remained on scene and are cooperating with the investigation. They will be transported to police headquarters to give detailed statements. This is not a random act of violence, as all involved parties are known to each other.

Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to photograph it and collect physical evidence.

Homicide Investigation in Steele Creek Division

Case Update: The skeletal remains have been identified as those of Keith Raymond Whitworth, a white male. Mr. Whitworth’s family has been notified of his death.

Mr. Whitworth was reported missing from Gastonia, NC, on December 2, 2009. The CMPD is investigating the case as a homicide and is working closely with the Gastonia Police Department.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit are still working to identify the remains that were located off Strollaway Road in the Steele Creek Division. Due to decomposition, race has not been determined, however, there were some distinct clothing items that appear to belong to a male.

Detectives were able to recover a pair of Wrangler jeans, a black woven belt, and a pair of men’s sized Puritan brand underwear. Along with a white, Fruit of the Loom tank top located inside of a No Boundaries black long sleeved shirt. The shirt has a photograph of a Lion’s Head on the front. Inside the pockets of the jeans, a Seneca brand cigarette pack, with a blue lighter and a uniquely colored pocket knife displaying the yellow, red and silver. The pocket knife also had a cross emblem in red along with a photograph of a motorcycle on both sides.
Detectives are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the victim based on the detailed clothing description provided. Anyone with information is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or contact Det. T Brandon at 704-432-TIPS.

Shots Fired at Probation Officer/City Councilman

Charlotte-Mecklenburg PD Homicide Detectives are conducting an investigation of a shooting that occurred at 9924 Shadowood Lane involving a State Probation Officer/Charlotte City Councilman.

The Probation Officer, Warren Turner, was conducting a routine investigation in the area and was fired upon by someone he did not know. Mr. Turner officer was not injured.

Officer Turner engaged in a short foot pursuit. The suspect got into a vehicle and fled the scene. Officer Turner followed the subject and lost sight of the vehicle while calling in the suspect’s location to CMPD Communications.

A short time later, the Steele Creek Division officers spotted the vehicle in the Woodlawn Road area and gave pursuit. The pursuit ended when the suspect vehicle turned into the church parking lot of the Clanton Presbyterian Church located at 335 Freeland Avenue.

Officers were able to apprehend the suspect after a short foot pursuit without incident. Derrick Alan Daniels, was taken into custody and is currently being interviewed by detectives. In addition, Homicide Detectives are conducting a canvass of the neighborhood. Crime Scene Search is collecting physical evidence.
