Homeless Sex Offenders

It looks like Sex Offender registries are not all they are cracked up to be! At least we have something- but it would help to know if your next door neighbor is a sex offender before letting your kids play in the backyard... Sex offenders should be tracked better and checked on more often- especially the repeat offenders. Let them know they are being watched and maybe they will think twice before re-offending.

Of course, you cannot rely on a sex offender registry to keep your kids safe but it helps! Sex offenders are everywhere and a registry doesn't tell you when they are out roaming the streets looking for victims.

The Sex Offender registries are especially ineffective when the information is incorrect or outdated. One address in Charlotte is where several sex offenders call home -- at least they do on the NC Sex Offender Registry. The address is that of the Uptown Shelter, located at 1210 North Tryon Street.

WBTV reported that even with so many living in one place, they are still hard to track. If you search the 28206 zip code, you will see that out of 46 registered sex offenders, 11 are listed as living at the shelter. According to WBTV, 8 of the 11 no longer reside at the shelter. So... where are they?

Twice a year, Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Deputies go out and knock on doors to make sure sex offenders live where they say they do. They also do a head count at the homeless shelter. Some of the sex offenders who list this address are truly homeless but other just lie since they know the address will be hard to check. Just another loophole these criminals slide right through.
