UNCC Campus Crime
CMPD and UNCC campus police worked together teaching students ways to avoid becoming victims. Campus police officer Sgt. Craig Nance said the biggest things students can do is "personal awareness (and) just being aware of your surroundings.” Police also suggest walking in groups on campus, keeping an eye on your belongings and always locking cars and dorm rooms. Also, students also shouldn’t be afraid to call police. After all, that is what they are there for.
Officers hope Wednesday’s awareness campaign will help them build a positive relationship with the students. So far, they say it is working. To help spread the message of safety, police will also walk door-to-door talking to students, hang information on their doors, and hold a community meeting to further discuss safety concerns. Keeping Our Courtrooms Safe
Thousands of people pass through the Mecklenburg County Courthouse every day-- CMPD officers and Sheriff's deputies make sure that nobody sneaks anything in that could threaten the safety of those inside.
In the past month, officers have collected razor blades, construction tools, drug scales, box cutters, pocket knives, bullets and shotgun shells at the metal detectors. 6NEWS watched deputies work the main courthouse doors for two hours. In just that time- they saw two people stopped for trying to bring in knives.
No weapons are allowed in the courtroom. The sheriff's office told 6NEWS that in 2005, more than 6,000 items were found. The list includes steak knives, tasers, a stun gun and handcuff keys. That number also includes what's found outside the courthouse. Throughout the day, deputies comb bushes and alcoves looking for things people stash before they try to come in. Deputies said they have to look closely because you never know what someone's intentions are.
"The main part of us being here is trying to keep a safe, controlled environment for the people who come in here," said Sheriff Deputy Rhodes. Everything collected gets documented and eventually a lot of it is burned. It's just part of the job, to keep the courts safe. "It's an ongoing process. Even when it gets slow, someone will surprise you," said Rhodes. Source: WCNC

Gang Turf War in Charlotte?
Police said they believe this latest tagging signifies that the group wants to move in on a neighborhood where the Kings have operated from in the past. Now police worry about the Bloods moving into the area - an action that usually results in a turf war, police said.
Photo Left: Gang Signs
Officers that work with the CMPD gang unit took pictures of the graffiti late Saturday afternoon. The spray painting or "tagging" on the street was done overnight on Friday. The gang unit is responsible for documenting which gangs are leaving graffiti and where- to keep tabs on where the gangs are operating.
Most of Charlotte's gang members are between 16 and 24. Police in Charlotte have identified 71 gangs, the largest being MS 13, Kings, Crips and Bloods. Officers documented about 850 gang members in Charlotte-Mecklenburg but believe as many as 1,300 could be active.

Crime in the Sky
The second airplane incident ended with an arrest made in Charlotte. Airport police and the Transportation Security Administration took Janet Gregory (R) into custody the moment her flight landed from Cleveland, OH. Airport officials told Eyewitness News she was cleaning and polishing her fingernails during the flight and refused to hand over her nail polish. Nail polish is one of the items banned under new security restrictions- for obvious reasons.
Authorities said when they tried to arrest Ms. Gregory- she kicked a TSA agent. Gregory is in the Mecklenburg County Jail charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, assault on a handicapped person and communicating threats. I am not sure who the handicapped person was that she assaulted...
Yesterday, a flight headed to Charlotte-Douglas International Airport from Boston was forced to turn around due to a strange odor on the plane- something that smelled like sulfur. The plane was evacuated and the passengers were put on another plane to Charlotte. Officials have not said what the smell was.
Man Tries to Kidnap Girl
Police said several people who witnessed the attempted abduction recognized Martinez and said he lived on the opposite end of the apartment complex. This allowed police to find him and arrest him. Police said the girls did the right thing by screaming to scare off their attacker. They also want to remind parents that children should not be left unsupervised even for a moment, and if they are playing with other children they should be watched by an adult.
Jail records show Martinez was arrested at least twice before- but not for any similar incidents.Police said they're checking to see if Martinez fits the description of suspects in any similar attacks in the area or in other parts of the city. Martinez is facing charges of kidnapping and assault on a child younger than 12 years old. Martinez is in the Mecklenburg County Jail with a bond set at $13,000. Source: WCNC

Tougher DWI Law in NC
Some of the changes with the new law:
- Currently, a blood alcohol test that is over the legal limit of .08 is only one factor a judge can consider. Under the new law- a BAC over .08 is all a judge will need to find a driver guilty.
- The law also makes it illegal for anyone under 21 to consume alcohol. Until now it has only been illegal to buy alcohol or possess it. Under the new law, police could use a breathalyzer on teens who they suspect have been drinking, even if they're not behind the wheel.
- The new law also increases prison time for repeat drunk drivers and requires prosecutors to provide a written explanation anytime they dismiss a DWI case. Source: WSOC-TV
