Shoot Out in Derita Neighborhood

A family dispute spilled out into the Derita neighborhood of northeast Charlotte on Monday evening, leaving one man in custody and his cousin dead. This is the third deadly shooting within 48 hours in Charlotte. The latest occurred while it was still light, with shots fired amid a kid-filled neighborhood.

Neighbors described it as a shootout-like duel, with one man firing a handgun and the other firing an assault-style rifle between their two homes on opposite sides of Fincher Boulevard just off Nevin Road. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said a dispute had simmered for a long time between Wilson Davis Jr., 27, and his cousin Clarence Elihue Ford, 38 (Shown R) By late Monday night, Davis was dead, and Ford was in a Charlotte jail, charged with murder.

The fight broke out just before 6:30 p.m. One neighbor said he saw a man walking backwards across the street, firing a rifle-style gun in his wake just like in the movies. He said he heard screaming: " `Don't shoot. Don't shoot. I got kids in the house.' "

Police were called. Upon their arrival, Davis was down and he didn't appear to be breathing. He died at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds. Ford was later charged with attempted murder and murder, Mecklenburg jail officials said. Investigators remained on the scene into the night, tracking down shell casings and piecing together what happened. They placed a weapon that looked like an assault-style rifle into a crime-scene van. Source: The Charlotte Observer
