Homicide Detectives Conducting a Death Investigation on Cherry Street

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Detectives are currently conducting a death investigation at 621 Cherry Street. The incident was reported on Friday, January 16, 2009, at 5:13 p.m., in the Providence Division. The victim has been identified; pending family notification, her name is being withheld.

Providence Division officers responded to a call for service in reference to an elderly female face down on her porch, not breathing. Medic arrived on scene and pronounced the victim deceased at 5:27 p.m. When officers arrived they roped off the scene, secured it and called for Homicide Unit detectives to respond.

Initial statements from witnesses place the victim in the front of her house earlier this morning at around 9:15 a.m. At this point in the investigation it is unknown whether the victim had contact with anyone else before the incident was reported.

Homicide Unit detectives are on scene canvassing the neighborhood while Crime Scene Search units are processing the scene for physical evidence. The cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
