VCAT Apprehends Suspect in Providence Division Shooting

Detectives with the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team, along with assistance from the Gang and Firearms Unit, arrested Ryan Demontra Hopkins for his involvement in a shooting that occurred at the 3500 block of Burkland Drive on Saturday, May 5, 2012.

On May 5, 2012, Providence Division patrol officers had responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call with one subject shot on Burkland Drive. Upon arrival officers located the victim, Torey Williams, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The suspect fled the scene before officers’ arrival.

Homicide Detectives responded to the scene and after conducting their initial investigations, they determined that the victim and suspect were known to one another and were having an argument when the suspect shot the victim.

After Homicide Detectives identified Mr. Hopkins as the shooter, VCAT and the Gang and Firearms Unit located and arrested Mr. Hopkins without incident. He was transported to police headquarters to be interviewed and has been charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill and Inflict Serious Injury with a gun (ADWIKISI-gun) and Possession of a Firearm by Felon. Mr. Hopkins is currently in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
