Charlotte Murder Suspect Arrested in Charleston

Joseph Green Brown
Charleston police have arrested Joseph Green Brown and charged him with the murder of his wife, Mamie Caldwell Brown. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police issued the arrest warrant Friday, and Brown was apprehended later that day at a Holiday Express located on Savannah Highway.

On Thursday, police found Mamie Brown murdered in her apartment unit at The Oaks Apartments, located off West WT Harris Boulevard. After talking to witnesses and collecting evidence, they determined Joseph Brown was the chief suspect in the case.

Joseph was formerly on death row in Florida for the rape and murder of a woman in 1974. Brown served 13 years awaiting execution before evidence prompted authorities to drop the charges.

Brown is currently in the custody of Charlotte authorities after being transported from Charleston. Police have asked anyone with information on this case to call a detective with the homicide unit at (704) 432-TIPS or call Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
