District Attorney's Report: Habitual Felon Team Convicts 21 Defendants

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The DA’s Habitual Felon Team convicted twenty-one defendants this week. The defendants entered guilty pleas in Mecklenburg County Superior Court before the Honorable H. William Constangy, Superior Court Judge.

Among those convicted were:

Christian Karmo, 23, pled guilty to 1) three counts of felony breaking or entering, 2) felony possession of stolen goods and 3) being a habitual felon. Karmo was sentenced to 60-84 months in prison. Karmo’s criminal record includes seven prior convictions for felony possession of stolen goods.
Robert Long, also known as Darrael Holland, 43, pled guilty to 1) felony breaking or entering, 2) felony possession of stolen goods and 3) two counts of breaking or entering a motor vehicle. Long was sentenced to 60-72 months in prison. Some of Long’s prior convictions include voluntary manslaughter and multiple counts of felony breaking or entering.
Wade Bolton, 21, pled guilty to 1) possession of a firearm by a felon and 2) being a habitual felon. Bolton was sentenced to 58-82 months in prison. Some of Bolton’s prior convictions include breaking or entering a motor vehicle, larceny of a firearm and felony breaking or entering.
John Sides, 33, pled guilty to 1) felony breaking or entering, 2) felony larceny and 3) being a habitual felon. Sides was sentenced to 51-74 months in prison. Sides’ criminal history includes nine prior convictions for felony breaking or entering and eight prior convictions for felony larceny.
Barron Broaden, 42, pled guilty to 1) sale of cocaine and 2) possession with the intent to sell or deliver cocaine. Broaden was sentenced to 42-65 months in prison. Some of Broaden’s prior convictions include attempted common law robbery and felony breaking or entering.
James Vance, 66, pled guilty to 1) possession with the intent to sell or deliver heroin and 2) being a habitual felon. Vance was sentenced to 38-58 months in prison. Vance’s criminal record includes multiple convictions of possession of cocaine.
Jerry Jones, 47, pled guilty to 1) felony breaking or entering and 2) felony larceny. Jones was sentenced to 32-58 months in prison. Jones’ criminal record includes multiple convictions of felony breaking or entering.
Obrian Kelly, 39, pled guilty to 1) sale of cocaine and 2) possession with the intent to sell or deliver cocaine. Kelly was sentenced to 30-46 months in prison. Some of Kelly’s prior convictions include indecent liberties with a minor and robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Alton Broadway, 54, pled guilty to 1) possession of a firearm by a felon. Broadway was sentenced to 25-39 months in prison. Broadway’s prior criminal record includes two convictions for robbery with a dangerous weapon. In addition, Broadway previously served a sentence as a habitual felon.
Carlton Pickett, 50, pled guilty to 1) possession of a firearm by a felon. Pickett was sentenced to 24-38 months in prison. Some of Pickett’s prior convictions include attempted common law robbery and habitual misdemeanor assault.
Jordan Gerow, 25, pled guilty to 1) two counts of felony breaking or entering a motor vehicle and 2) being a habitual felon. Gerow was sentenced to 20-36 months in prison. Some of Gerow’s previous convictions include felony breaking or entering and felony larceny.
Michael Byers, 33, pled guilty to 1) possession of five or more counterfeit instruments. Byers was sentenced to 20-33 months in prison. Some of Byers’ prior convictions include felony breaking or entering and obtaining property by false pretense.

Note: Almost all guilty pleas entered in criminal administrative court are the result of an agreed upon plea arrangement between the State and the defendant, which is then approved by the sentencing judge.
