Gang Related Shooting on Toddville Road

Shortly after 11:00 pm, police responded to 2800 Toddville Road in reference to four people suffering from gunshot wounds. All four victims were transported to CMC with non-life threatening injuries.
Police say the victims were uncooperative and it is most likely the shooting was gang related. The CMPD Gang Unit is investigating the shooting.

State Employees Credit Union Robbed

Shortly before 3:00 pm, the State Employees Credit Union, located at 10820 S. Tryon Street was robbed by a black male suspect. Police say the suspect approached the teller, indicated he had a gun and demanded money. The teller reached into the cash drawer, retrieved cash and put it on the counter. The man took the cash from the counter and walked out of the credit union in an unknown direction.
The suspect is a black male with medium brown skin, approx. 25 yrs. old, 5'7"-5"-5'9" and weighs approx. 175-185 pounds. At the time of the robbery, the suspect was wearing a black ball cap that had "Sox" printed on the front, gray and black striped sweater and dark pants.

Two Shot & Killed on Weyland Ave

On Saturday morning, police responded to 2224 Weyland Avenue after a friend of the homeowner found two people shot to death inside the residence.

Homicide detectives say the victims are 68-year old Tsung Su and 19-year old Brandon Santos Salazar. Police haven't said if they have any suspects or why the two men were killed.

Man Shot & Killed by his Cousin

At 7:15 pm on Friday, police responded to a home on Potters Glen Road in reference to a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers found 21-year old Tracey Albert McKenzie deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.

Homicide Detectives arrested and charged McKenzie's 29-year old cousin, Malik Barcel James (Shown Right) with murder.

Woman Murdered in the University Area

On Thursday evening, CMPD Officers responded to the Heather Ridge Apartments on Meadow Vista Road and discovered 30-year old Kellie S. Owens deceased inside her apartment.

Police say Owen's 2-year old daughter was in the apartment at the time of the murder but she was not harmed.

Two 16-Year Olds Arrested for Robbery

Alphonso Ford, 16, (Top) and Tadrey Springs, 16, (Bottom) were arrested today after they robbed several people and led police on a chase before they were apprehended and arrested.

Police say Ford and Springs began their crime spree around 10:20 am, when they robbed several people at gunpoint at the North Pointe Apartments, located on Countryside Drive.

Fifteen minutes later, Ford and Springs robbed another victim on West Arrowhead Dr.

Shortly after the robberies, a police officer spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspect's vehicle. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver sped away at a high rate of speed.

After a short chase, the suspect driver hit a guardrail near the intersection of Freedom Drive and Morehead Street. The two robbery suspects jumped from the car and ran, however, officers chased them into the woods and apprehended them.

The suspects are only sixteen but they both have prior arrest records.

2007 Charlotte Federal Court Recap

The Department of Justice sent out a press release today with a recap and updates on some of the Federal cases they have prosecuted in the Western District of NC this year. Here are some local cases of interest:
  • HIDDEN VALLEY KINGS: In March, 20 gang members, drug suppliers and gang associates were indicted in federal court. 17 of the 20 defendants have entered guilty pleas and are presently in pre-trial detention awaiting sentencing.
  • JIMMIE VANCE GRUBBS: In October, the 67-year old teacher accused of molesting boys since the 1970's was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
  • PASTOR JOHN H. WALKER: In August, the Senior Pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church was sentenced to 63 months imprisonment on nine federal criminal counts in connection with bank loans, tax evasion, and false statements to federal agents.
  • SALLIE & DONALD SAXON: In November, three people involved in running a web-based escort service were indicted in Federal Court for money laundering and prostitution.
  • CLAUDE MICHAEL KAHN: In December, a Federal Air Marshall was indicted in Federal Court for accepting unlawful gratuities and making false statements to Federal Agents.

Murder at Mint Hill Sports Bar

UPDATE: The Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Office has dropped the murder charge against Gary Dollarhite. The shooting was self-defense.

Last night, Mint Hill police officers and Medic were called to Rookie's Sports Bar & Grill on Brighton Park Drive in reference to shots fired inside the bar.

Two people were shot during the incident. Steven William Dias, 25, was killed and a second person suffered non-life threatening injuries.

At the time of the shooting, a group of people were inside the bar attending a private party but police have not said what led to the shooting.

Police arrested two men in connection with the shooting: Gary Dollarhite, 33, and his father, James Dollarhite, 57.

The shooter, Gary Dollarhite, (Top) is charged with murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

James Dollarhite came to the scene after the shooting and is charged with going armed to the terror of the people, communicating threats, carrying a concealed weapon and assault by pointing a gun.

Two Men Shot & Killed on Christmas

As we were busy enjoying time with family and friends over the holidays, CMPD homicide detectives were busy investigating two different murders that occurred in Charlotte.

On Christmas Eve, officers responded to 2732 Old Steele Creek Road around 10:30 pm in reference to shots fired in the area. Upon arrival, police found 27-year old I.D. Jenkins suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shortly after midnight on Christmas morning, police were called to the Sommerset Apartments at 1030 Tara Lane, in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located 30-year old Santiago Amaro, who was pronounced deceased on the scene.

First Citizens Bank Robbed on Christmas Eve

Shortly after noon on Christmas Eve, the First Citizens Bank located at 4325 Randolph Rd., was robbed by a black male. Police say the suspect approached the teller, threatened the use of a gun and demanded money. The teller complied and gave the suspect money from her cash drawer. The suspect then left the bank through the front doors.

The suspect is described as a black male, 35-40 years old, 5'10-6'2, 160-200 lbs. He was described as having “bad skin,” either acne scarring or burn marks on the lower portion of his face below the eyes.

The suspect was last seen wearing black jeans and a black jacket with light colored areas on the left sleeve and lower back. He was wearing a black baseball cap with a light colored circular emblem on the front depicting the cartoon character "Stewie Griffin." The suspect may have fled the scene in a black or dark colored, older model vehicle, possibly a Mazda.

Man Stabbed to Death on Julia Ave

Last night, police responded to 2420 Julia Avenue in reference to a report of a man stabbed to death. Upon arrival, police found 32-year old Moises Lionidas Aquilar deceased.
Police believe 29-year old Raymundo Antonio Castaneda (R) is responsible for the murder. He is currently on the run and police are looking for him.

Mother Charged with Neglect after Apartment Fire

Early this morning, the Charlotte Fire Department responded to the Robinsdale Apartments in reference to an apartment fire. Robinsdale is one of the Charlotte Housing Authority's subsidized housing complexes, located on Margie Ann Drive.

Upon arrival, firefighters learned four children were left inside the apartment unattended and started the fire. Thankfully, firefighters were able to contain the fire and nobody was hurt.

Police arrested the children's mother, 30-year old Caprice Roynelle Neely and charged her with five counts of neglecting a juvenile. Her bond was set at $2,500. Police contacted the Department of Social Services but it is unknown if they took the children.

CMPD: November Crime Statistics Summary

CMPD provided the following information on 12/20/07:
  • Violent index crimes decreased by -5.2% while property crimes rose by 4%.
  • Homicides were down nearly -20% through the of November (see year-to-date information below)
  • Robberies were holding just about even; -.02% reduction compared to the same period in 2006
  • Rapes decreased -21.5%
  • Aggravated assaults were down -7.4%
  • Burglaries decreased by -5.4% with residential break-ins accounting for most of the increase (11.6%)
  • While vehicle thefts dropped -17.7%, larcenies increased 14.5% over last year. Continuing the year's trend, thefts from vehicles is the primary factor, up 23.3%
  • Arrests by CMPD officers were down slightly; -1.9% compared to the same period last year
  • Traffic collisions in the first ten months of 2006 showed a small increase (0.8%), however, fatal accidents showed a decline with 53 crashes and 59 deaths this year compared to 59 crashes with 61 deaths last year
  • CMPD officers issued 13.4% more citations this year, including a 22.9% increase in citations for hazardous traffic violations

Man Caught on Camera Breaking into Cars

On December 13th, Central Division Officers utilized the CMPD camera system to capture a suspect who broke into a parked Toyota 4-Runner.

Officers observed the suspect looking into three different cars before he broke the window out of the victims’ car and climbed inside. Officers responded quickly and captured the suspect as he attempted to leave the scene.

The entire incident was captured by the CMPD camera system. This system consists of CCTV cameras in Uptown Charlotte, and is directed toward public areas- particularly parking lots during this time of year. The CMPD cameras have captured over 200 crimes since their use began in the fall of 2000.

The suspect, Marquise Brown (R) was charged with felony B&E. He has been arrested and charged in three prior cases of auto theft in the Uptown area and has also been previously charged with Vehicle Theft and felony Breaking and Entering-Residence.

Police Looking for Dilworth Billiards Shooter

UPDATE: 12-31-07- Cedric Gaston was apprehended. He is in the Mecklenburg County Jail with a bond set at $215,000.

Last night, WBTV reported that police are looking for 20-year old Cedric Gaston, (Shown R) who they believe is one of the men responsible for robbing and shooting the owner of Dilworth Billiards earlier this month.

As usual, Gaston has a lengthy criminal record in North Carolina and South Carolina- including 16 arrests in Charlotte since March of 2005.

'Tis the Season for Armed Robberies

Wednesday, December 19th:

  • 12:42 am @ 3300 Queen City Drive: The Waffle House was robbed by two black male suspects armed with a shotgun and a handgun. The suspects are two black males. One was wearing dark clothing and the other wearing camouflage. The suspects fled the area in a small dark colored car. No injuries.
  • 08:32 am @ 2500 Finchley Drive: The victim stated that he was robbed by a black male armed with a handgun.
  • 02:08 pm @ 2400 Kendrick Avenue: Two black males armed with guns and dressed in black kicked in the back door of an occupied home. The suspects robbed the victims of money and property and ran into woods.
  • 08:10 pm @ 7800 Causeway Drive: Two black male suspects armed with handguns, attempted to rob the victim. One suspect was wearing a black hoodie and the other was wearing a grey hoodie. The suspects fled in a gold Honda occupied by two other black males. No injuries.
  • 08:29 pm @ 4400 Central Avenue: The Value Village was robbed by a black male, approx. 5'9", wearing all black clothing, and a black mask, armed with a long gun. The suspect fled on foot. K-9 and the helicopter responded. No injuries.
  • 08:41 pm @ 4600 Randolph Road: Two black male suspects, one of which was armed w/ a handgun, forced their way into the victim's residence. They assaulted the victim and demanded money. The suspects fled on foot. The victim was transported to CMC by medic w/ NLT injuries.
  • 08:57 pm @ 8700 Mount Holly Road: Jerry's Minimart was robbed by a black male with a thin build. He was wearing a black shirt, black hat, and blue bandana and was armed with a handgun. The suspect fled in a blue or black Nissan. No injuries.
  • 09:50 pm @ 7700 Network Lane: The victim was assaulted and robbed by a black male suspect, approx. 5'8", thin build, wearing jeans, a blue jacket w/ orange hood, and a green stocking cap, armed w/ a crowbar. The suspect fled on foot. The victim refused medic.
  • 10:01 pm @ 5600 Paces Glen Avenue: Attempt only. The victim advised that a black male, approx. 5'6", shoulder length dreads, wearing a black and white hoodie, armed w/ a handgun, attempted to rob the victim. The suspect fled in a campaign colored Honda. No injuries.
  • 10:48 pm @ 5700 Dockside Drive: The victim was robbed by two black males- both wearing black hoodies and armed with handguns. The suspects fled in a light colored Honda. No injuries.

Thursday, December 20th:

  • 12:15 am @ 700 State Street: The victim reported he was robbed at gunpoint by a black male suspect. No injuries.
  • 01:32 am @ 900 Falls Creek Lane: The victims advised that they were robbed at gunpoint by a white male suspect. The suspect is described as a white male, 5'10", 195 lbs, blond hair with facial hair- last seen wearing a brown jacket with the letter "R" on it, jeans and tan Timberland shoes. The suspect was armed with a handgun. The suspect fled the area on foot. No injuries.
  • 03:56 am @ 4300 Park Road: The victim reported being robbed at gunpoint by a white male suspect. The suspect is described as a white male, wearing a light colored shirt and jeans. The suspect was armed with a handgun and fled the area in a black Ford 150 pickup truck. No injuries.
  • 06:14 am @ 600 Key Street: The victim reported she was robbed by a white male who hit her in the head with a firearm. The suspect is a white male, last seen wearing a black tee shirt and jeans. The victim was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
  • 07:23 am @ 2900 E. W. T. Harris Blvd: The victim business, Food Lion was robbed at gunpoint by two black male suspects. The suspects were armed with a rifle. The suspects are described as black males, 5'10'-6'0", last seen wearing all black and fleeing the scene on foot and then getting into an unknown type of silver car. K-9 was called to the scene. No injuries.
  • 12:01 pm @ 5600 Central Avenue: An armed Black male robbed a victim in the parking lot and fired shots before leaving the scene in a gold Honda.
  • 03:00 pm @ 3500 Mt. Holly Huntersville Rd: An armed robbery occurred at the American Community Bank.
  • 06:18 pm @ 3500 Brookshire Blvd: The victim reported he was fueling his vehicle at the gas pump when he was approached by two black males and a black female. One suspect was armed with a handgun which he put to the victim's stomach and demanded money. The suspects fled in a vehicle. No injuries.
  • 06:24 pm @ 2500 Beatties Ford Road: The victim reported that a black male and a black female approached her in the parking lot of the restaurant. One pointed a handgun at her and demanded her money. The victim complied and the suspects fled in a newer silver vehicle. No injuries.
  • 07:18 pm @ South Blvd. & Woodlawn Road: The victim reported that a black male wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans robbed him at gunpoint and then fled on foot. No injuries,
  • 08:16 pm @ 9100 Eaker Court: Two black males approached a female victim and pointed a gun at her. One suspect was wearing a black jacket the other a white jacket. The female fled on foot and called police. No injuries.
  • 08:23 pm @ 10100 Brawley Lane: Two black males approached a male suspect who was in his parked vehicle. The suspects pointed a gun at the victim and demanded he give them the car. One suspect was wearing a black jacket the other wearing a white jacket. The victim fled the scene in his vehicle. No injuries.
  • 09:14 pm @ 4400 N. Tryon Street: The victim reported that he was at the bus stop when two black males in a red car stopped and approached him. The suspects hit the victim several times with their fists and took his money. One suspect was approx. 6'0" wearing a black hoodie, tan pants and was in his twenties. The other suspect was 5'10" wearing a black sweater and also in his twenties. The victim had minor injures and was treated on scene.
  • 09:19 pm @ 1000 Blythe Blvd: A black male wearing dark clothing pointed a gun at a cafeteria employee and took money from the cash drawer at CMC-Main.
  • 10:57 pm @ 3900 Picasso Court: The victim reported that a tan or gold two door Honda Accord approached. The passenger got out of the vehicle and demanded money from him at gunpoint. The passenger was a black male wearing a black toboggan with white stripes. The driver was also a black male. The suspects left in the vehicle. No injuries.
  • 11:05 pm @ 1300 Santee Street: The victim reported he was robbed by force by a black male suspect.
  • 11:58 pm @ 8100 S. Tryon Street: The victim business, Blockbuster Video, was robbed at gunpoint by a black male suspect. The suspect is described as a black male, 6'1", 40 yoa, jeans, black shirt, size 13 shoes and wearing a monkey mask. The suspect fled on foot. No injuries.

CMS Teacher Arrested for Selling Drugs

On Tuesday, Mason Andrew Murchison, a teacher at CMS' Alexander Graham Middle School, was arrested after a six week investigation by CMPD's ABC & Vice and Narcotics Division.
Police say the investigation began when they received information about drugs being sold inside a local restaurant which led them to Murchison.

Murchison was arrested for selling, delivering and possessing with the intent to sell and deliver cocaine. Police say none of the incidents took place on school property and no students were involved.

14-year old Shot & Killed on Mumford Lane

UPDATE: Police say Malcolm Ruth was shot by his 11-year old neighbor. At this time, no charges have been filed against the boy.

Around 6:30 pm, CMPD Officers responded to 1406 Mumford Lane in reference to a teenager shot outside his residence.

Police say they found the 14-year old victim, Malcolm Perez Ruth inside his residence suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. Ruth was transported to Carolinas Medical Center where he later died as a result of his injuries.

Prostitution Arrests in Charlotte

1998 Sexual Assault Case Solved

The CMPD Sexual Assault Cold Case detectives identified and charged 36-year old Darrell Boyd (R) with two brutal sexual assaults committed in 1998:

May 1, 1998: Vinca Circle @ 9:30 am: 22 year-old victim was home alone in her apartment. The suspect entered the apartment through the front door armed with a handgun. He held the victim and sexually assaulted her for more than an hour before fleeing.

May 14, 1998: English Hills Drive @ 11:00 pm. The victim was home alone in her apartment. The suspect entered her residence through a sliding glass door. He held the victim in her residence for nearly three hours, physically and sexually assaulting her, before fleeing.

Police say Boyd was scheduled to be released December 13th from a correctional facility in Ohio where he had been serving two years for a crime he committed there. Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Deputies traveled to the facility over the weekend and transported Boyd back to Charlotte and booked him into the Mecklenburg County Jail.

In addition to an unrelated charge for Trafficking Heroin, Darrell Boyd has been charged with the following crimes: 4 counts 1st degree Rape; 2 counts 2nd degree Rape; 4 counts 1st degree Sex Offense; 3 counts 2nd degree Sex Offense; 2 counts 1st degree Kidnapping; 1 count Robbery; 1 count 1st degree Burglary; 1 count Felony B&E

Attempted Kidnapping of Woman at the Dowd YMCA

UPDATE: View Video of Suspect

On December 6th, a woman reported an armed man tried to abduct her outside the Dowd YMCA, located off Morehead Street.

The woman told police she got out of her car to go to the gym around 10:00 am when a man held a gun to her stomach and demanded she get back in her car.

SunTrust Bank Robbed on South Kings Drive

The FBI Charlotte Safe Streets Task Force is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying and locating the individual who robbed the SunTrust Bank located at 101 South Kings Drive.

On Thursday, December 13, 2007, at approximately 12:25 pm, a lone male entered the bank, approached a bank teller, and demanded money from the teller.

After obtaining an undisclosed amount of money, the suspect exited the bank. At this time, it is not known if the suspect fled the area on foot or in a vehicle. Although no weapon was observed or displayed during the robbery, the bank robber threatened use of a gun. There were no injuries as a result of the robbery.

The suspect was described as a black male with facial hair, approximately 5’9”-5'10" in height, medium build, and approximately 30's in age. At the time of the robbery, the suspect was wearing a dark baseball cap with an emblem on the front of the cap, a white dress shirt and dark-colored tie with horizontal stripes, dark slacks, and tennis shoes.
