CMPD Detectives Investigating a Homicide on Brookshire Blvd

Case Update: Detectives have signed a murder warrant on Edward Terrell Sloan (R) for the murder of Michael Ray Simpson.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide, ADW and Robbery Detectives are currently investigating a shooting on Brookshire Blvd. which left one man deceased. The victim has been identified as Michael Ray Simpson. The incident occurred today at 2:30 a.m., at 3601 Brookshire Blvd. in the Metro Division.

Metro Division officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call advising one male had been shot. When officers arrived on scene they discovered the male victim lying on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound. The Charlotte Fire Department and Medic treated the victim on scene and transported him to Carolinas Medical Center. The victim underwent surgery; however, a short time later he was pronounced deceased by CMC medical staff.

Based on the preliminary investigation and witness statements, the robbery and shooting occurred on Honeywood Ave, which is across the street from 3601 Brookshire Blvd. The victim then ran to 3601 Brookshire Blvd. for help. Witnesses advised they saw two males fleeing the scene in a dark colored SUV style vehicle.

Metro Division officers have conducted a canvass of the neighborhood and Crime Scene Search is on scene as well, photographing the scene and collecting physical evidence. Detectives are currently interviewing witnesses at police headquarters.

Detectives Conducting a Death Investigation on Parker Rd

Case Update: Based on the information obtained from the preliminary investigation and evidence at the scene, this incident has been ruled a suicide.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide and ADW Detectives are currently conducting a death investigation at 1400 Parker Rd. The incident occurred on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at 5:05 p.m. in the Westover Division. The victim has been identified; pending family notification her name will be released.

Westover Division officers responded to an assist fire call. Upon their arrival, The Charlotte Fire Department had extinguished a vehicle fire and discovered a female victim suffering from a single gunshot wound. CFD and Medic treated the victim on scene and transported her to Carolinas Medical Center. A short time later she was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Westover Division officers and K-9 officers canvassed the neighborhood for witnesses. Crime Scene Search units are processing the scene for physical evidence and members of the Arson Task Force are working to determine the cause and origin of the vehicle fire. In addition, Homicide and ADW detectives are interviewing witnesses.

Based on the information obtained from the preliminary investigation and evidence at the scene, detectives are working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the victim’s death.

Man Charged with Old Navy Robbery

On May 11, 2009, Demario Rollins, 18, entered the Old Navy store located at 9000 JM Keynes Dr., and violently attacked a 46-year old female employee. According to police, Rollins punched her in the face causing serious facial injuries. He also robbed the business of merchandise.

The case was presented to the District Attorneys office and warrants were signed on Demario Rollins on June 11, 2009, charging him with Common Law Robbery and Assault Inflicting Serious Injury in reference to the robbery.

This is Rollins 6th arrest in Mecklenburg County-- since he turned 16.

Former CMS Teacher Accused Of Having Sex With Student

Richard Priode, 44, a former CMS band teacher is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year old student.

Priode was teaching at South Mecklenburg High School in 2007 when he had the consensual sexual relationship with the student. The accusations only involve one student.

The police investigation didn't begin until April of 2009 when someone reported the incident to CMPD. Priode is charged with indecent liberties with a student.

Priode worked for CMS from August 2006 to June 2008. He left CMS last year and went to work at Sullivan Middle School in Rock Hill, SC.

Detectives Investigating a Homicide on Wynbrook Way

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Detectives are currently conducting a homicide investigation at 4519 Wynbrook Way in the North Division. The victim is Douglas Bernard Black, 43. The incident occurred on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at approximately 8:00 p.m.

North Division officers responded to an assault with a weapon call at Tanglewood Apartments. When officers arrived on scene, they found the victim sitting inside a vehicle, suffering from an apparent gun shot wound; he was pronounced deceased on scene. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and then seeing a black male leaving the scene in a silver four door compact vehicle.

Homicide Detectives are conducting a canvass of the neighborhood. Crime Scene Search is on scene as well, photographing the scene and collecting physical evidence.

Detectives Investigating a Shooting on Westridge Dr.

UPDATE II: Two suspects have been arrested in connection to this incident. A fifteen year old juvenile has been arrested and charged with Murder, Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Conspiracy to Commit Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon. The juvenile’s name will not be released in accordance with North Carolina State Law.

In addition, Jonas Jermel Davis (R) was arrested earlier today by the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team and charged with Murder, Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Conspiracy to Commit Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon.

UPDATE: The victim, Shawtel Demond Montgomery, died at Carolinas Medical Center at 10:36 a.m. as a result of the injuries he sustained in this morning’s shooting on Westridge Dr.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department ADW and Homicide Detectives are currently investigating a shooting on Westridge Dr. which left one man seriously injured. The victim in this incident has been identified; pending family notification his name will be released. The incident occurred on Sunday, June 7, 2009, at approximately 2:30 a.m., at the intersection of Westridge Dr and Ranch Rd. in the Freedom Division.

Freedom Division officers responded to a 911 call in reference to a suspicious vehicle in the 4400 block of Westridge Dr. When officers arrived on scene they located a male victim unresponsive inside a dark colored Ford Explorer with the passenger side door open suffering from a gunshot wound. Charlotte Fire Department and Medic arrived on scene, treated and transported the victim to Carolinas Medical Center where he remains in critical condition.

ADW and Homicide detectives, along with Freedom Division officers canvassed the neighborhood for any potential witnesses. Crime Scene Search units processed the scene for physical evidence.

Mint Hill Police Seeking Suspect in Shooting

On June 6, 2009, at approximately 5:30am, Mint Hill Police received information that a victim of a shooting was being treated at Presbyterian Hospital in Matthews. After meeting with the victim, whose name is not being released due to concerns for his safety, stated the altercation occurred on Standing Wood Court in Mint Hill around 3:00 am.

The altercation between the victim and the suspect, Tony Maurice Knox, 31, began verbally and then turned physical. Tony Knox left the scene after the physical altercation and returned a few minutes later to meet the victim again. At this time, Tony Knox presented a small firearm and shot the victim. The victim received injuries to his hand and leg, but has already been released from the hospital.

Two warrants have been issued for Tony Maurice Knox in connection with this incident. Mint Hill Police are requesting anyone with information about his whereabouts please contact Detective Garmon at 704-545-1085 as soon as possible. Anyone reporting information can remain anonymous.

Tony Knox was last seen driving a 2000 Mercury Moutaineer, green in color displaying NC registration XYK-8186.

The victim reports being robbed by an unknown B/M suspect. The victim was getting items out of his SUV when he was approached by the suspect that pointed a black semi auto hand gun at him and demanded money. The suspect fled the scene on foot.

The victim reported that suspect #1 got in the victim's unlocked passenger door while the victim was stopped at a stoplight. The suspect struck the victim in his face and displayed a handgun. Suspect #1 ordered the victim to drive to a nearby ATM where suspect #2 was waiting. The suspects forced the victim to withdraw money from the ATM, which the suspects took from the victim. The suspects then punched the victim several times before they fled the scene in a vehicle.

The suspects forced entry into the victim's residence without consent from the victims, while the victims were located inside the residence. The suspects used a firearm to pistol whip the victim causing serious lacerations to the victim's head and face. Detectives Investigate Shooting on Cross Roads Place

UPDATE: The victim, Shamon Devonta Phillips died at Carolinas Medical Center at 8:06 a.m. as a result of the injuries she sustained in this morning’s shooting on Cross Roads Place. Family notification has been completed by Homicide detectives.

At this time, Tairmi Yohaun Thorne is being charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. The case will be presented to the District Attorney to determine if additional charges will be filed against Mr. Thorne.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Detectives are currently investigating a shooting that occurred on Saturday, June 6, 2009, at approximately 3:45 a.m. The incident took place at 2928 Cross Roads Pl, in the Westover Division. The victim has been identified; pending family notification her name will be released.

Westover Division officers responded to a report of a person being shot. When officers arrived on scene, they located the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported by Medic to Carolina ’s Medical Center where she is currently in critical condition.

Based on preliminary witness statements, the victim and her boyfriend were returning home from a night out. He said they were sitting on couch when the gun discharged; striking her in the head. The boyfriend immediately called 911 and advised his girlfriend was shot. He was present when officers arrived on scene and was transported to Police Headquarters where he is cooperating with detectives.

Crime Scene Search Investigators are currently processing the scene of the shooting and Westover Division officers are canvassing the neighborhood.

Family Dollar on Wilkinson Blvd Robbed

On May 18, 2009, at 7:40 pm, the Family Dollar located at 3400 Wilkinson Boulevard, was robbed by two suspects. The detective assigned to this case is seeking any information on this suspect and his identification.

Detectives Investigating a Homicide on St Vardell Lane

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Detectives are currently conducting a homicide investigation at 3431-D St Vardell Lane in the Westover Division. The victim has been identified as Yong Roo Hwang. The incident occurred on Thursday, June 4, 2009, at approximately 6:36 p.m.

Westover Division officers responded to an assault with a weapon call at Golden Eye Trading, a clothing store owned by Mr. Hwang. When officers arrived on scene, they found Mr. Hwang suffering from an apparent gun shot wound; he was pronounced deceased on scene. Based on preliminary witness statements, and evidence collected at the scene, robbery is believed to be the motive.

'Account Take Over' Suspects Wanted


CMPD is asking for the public's assistance in locating the three people shown in the photographs above. All of the suspects are involved in what is called "Account Take Over’s."

The suspect(s) obtain the bank account information of the unsuspecting account holders by calling them at home and use this information to make counterfeit checks, deposit the check(s) into the accounts; at which point they would go into the bank and cash the counterfeit checks.

The suspect(s) have also pretended to be the account holder and have called the bank in an attempt to allow the transactions to go through. Financial crimes unit is requesting information to identify and locate these suspects, which have so far compromised of two separate accounts.

CMPD - University City Division: Larceny From Autos Alert!

In the past 24 hours, CMPD is reporting 24 different 'Larceny from Auto' cases occurring in the University City Division. 19 of these cases occurred in Response Area 2, which encompasses the apartment complexes surrounding the UNCC campus.

CMPD and the University City Division is asking that you please remove all valuables out of your vehicles. This is especially true for GPS' (and their mounts), laptops, money, weapons, purses, etc. Also, police ask that you lock your cars and your apartments.

Keep in mind... it only takes the bad guys seconds to get into your vehicle and take your valuables.

Police say they have extra patrols in all of the complexes and are continually patrolling these areas. If you see any suspicious vehicles or suspicious people please call 911. Police need your assistance in catching these guys.

CMPD's Crime Statistics Summary for May 2009

Through the end of May 2009, the preliminary total for Index Offenses was -24.5% lower than the same five months last year.

-Property crime decreased by -24.3% while violent crime was down -25.5%.
- 16 homicides were reported compared to 37 in the same period in 2008 for a reduction of -56.8%.

All but one of the violent Index crime categories experienced decreases over the same period last year:
- Total robberies decreased -26.8%.
- The number of rape offenses increased +4.6% (5 additional cases)
- Aggravated assaults declined -25.9%.
- Burglary overall was down -25.3%, with declines of -23.4% in residential and -31.0% in commercial cases.
- Reports of vehicle thefts decreased by -35.4%.
- Total larceny cases declined by -22.2% with the larcenies from auto down by -31.5%.
- Total arson cases were down -13.0%.

Detectives Investigting a Homicide off Statesville Road

Case Update: A murder warrant was issued earlier today for Fisgerald Demont Kilgo for the murder of Drew Thompson. The Violent Criminal Apprehension Team, with the assistance of the S.W.A.T. team and patrol officers arrested Mr. Kilgo today shortly after 5 p.m.
This arrest marks Kilgo’s 30th arrest in Mecklenburg County since 1996.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide and ADW Detectives are currently investigating a homicide that occurred on Monday, June 1, 2009, at approximately 11:06 p.m. The incident took place at 9315 Statesville Rd in the North Division. The victim has been identified as Drew McDonald Thompson; the next of kin has been notified.

North Division officers responded to a report of a person shot in the parking lot of the Hilton Garden Inn at 9315 Statesville Rd. When officers arrived on scene, they found the victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was transported by Medic to Carolinas Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

Based on preliminary witness statements, this incident is believed to be related to a drug deal. Detectives are interviewing possible suspects who were detained on a traffic stop by Metro Division Officers on Beatties Ford Rd shortly after the incident occurred.

Crime Scene Search Investigators are currently processing the scene of the homicide and the scene of the traffic stop on Beatties Ford Rd.

Detectives Investigting a Homicide on Ingleside Drive

UPDATE: The victim in this case has been identified as Yennifer Karina Fuentes, 31. The suspect in this case is Victor Alfonso Cruz-Garcia. He is charged with the murder of Ms. Fuentes.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Detectives are currently conducting a homicide investigation at 5927 Ingleside Drive in Westover Division. The victim has been identified; pending notification of next of kin her name is being withheld. The incident occurred on Monday, June 1, 2009, at approximately 10:44 p.m.

Westover Division officers responded to check the welfare call at the above address. When officers arrived on scene, they found the victim suffering from an apparent stab wound. The victim was pronounced deceased on scene. Based on preliminary witness statements, this is believed to be a domestic related incident. Detectives have developed a suspect in this case. He will be transported to police headquarters for questioning.

Detectives Investigting a Homicide on Rocky Mount Ct.

Update: CMPD Homicide detectives have charged Tanya Renee Dixon with the murder of Mr. Young.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Detectives are currently investigating a shooting on Rocky Mount Ct., which left one man deceased. The victim in this incident has been identified as William Thomas Young, 27. The incident occurred on Monday, June 1, 2009, at approximately 9:24 a.m., at 5823 Rocky Mount Ct. in the Freedom Division.

Freedom Division officers responded to an assist Medic call for service at 5823 Rocky Mount Ct. When officers arrived on scene they discovered that an altercation had taken place inside the residence. At approximately 10:00 a.m., CMPD officers received a call for service that a man was being treated for a gunshot wound at Mercy Hospital. He was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival. Detectives determined that the man who was deceased at Mercy was involved in the altercation that took place on Rocky Mount Ct.

Based on the preliminary investigation and witness statements, the deceased individual and suspect are known to each other. Detectives are currently interviewing witnesses at police headquarters.
